Haven’t they heard of User Friendly Interface!!!! HCI 101

ARGH… in relation to the teething problems… this Wordpress is causing me to pull my hair out. I mean it has lousy WYSIWYG interface, horrible file uploading services and lagi worst photo management system .

Now the reason why this is getting to me so much, is because I sort of undertaken the job to fully write about our Bangkok Holiday Blog, as I am holding all the photos. Now this is lots and lots of photos, nearly 600 mb of it . Although I am going step by step of our holiday, there are tonnes of photos to upload for each steps.. When i mean tonnes, a few is measured to be about 20 and alot means 100 over !! And the WYSIWYG interface allows 1 photo upload at a time.

Blardy hell, this is like taking ages to write a damn blog, that by the time I have the photos uploaded, I’ve lost my inspiration to blog.

Can anyone out there suggest a great WYSIWYG apps ( GREAT not GOOD!!!), and a similarly great photo management system ( AGAIN GREAT not GOOD!!! ) .

It could be my dementia here, but I think I can hear some ppl saying.. use FTP. That is much easier. However remember we are still teething, and I haven’t gotten my FTP account. Not to mention I have to figure a way around the firewalls that I have at home or the office.

Why can’t programmers understand the importance of Human Computer Interface.. I remember in Uni, I took that course.. and loads of Computer Science Students failed this subject ( which by me was such a breeze as I wasn’t a pure computer science student). Sigh… Yes Computer Science folks.. users are really dumb arses ( In reply to a fellow classmate’s from Computer Science Degree, questions to the lecturer). Please assume so when y ou are doing your applications

You can try this photo sharing webiste:

    http://www.flickr.com/

They provide free image hosting and if I’m not mistaken, they have a plugin for wordpress too. This will save you up a lot of disk space and bandwidth if you have a tone of photos to show.

Well, the problem with flickr is that there’s an upload bandwidth limit of 20mb. Considering Lincoln’s comment above about users being dumb, how many are going to perform compression before uploading? I suppose its not a matter of hosting or harddisks or interfaces, its bringing all the individual parts together and creating a workable one click solution.

well..first of all i suggest u compress all the sizes using a photoshop action… make the sizes smaller to.. then google for this piece of php code called lussumo filebrowser… it has to reside in your own server.

upload your photos to a folder and subfolder. put the filebrowser inside and u have a simple image browser.

Yeah, we do have the Tiger OS type admin installed. I do agree that it is coolness. But unfortunately, the effect is only truly visible when using a Mozilla type browser (e.g. Firefox). I’m probably the only one taking advantage of this fact. lol.

We’ll look into the script that you suggested. Many thanks Ethan.

Wordpress is not meant to handle photos, it’s a blogging tool intended for text, not photoblogging, use gallery or coppermine for proper photo management, and anyway images are best uploaded via FTP.

Indeed you are correct (hence the name Wordpress). But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be extended to do so. Keep watching this site. We have every intention of making photo galleries more manageable via wordpress.

[…] Boredworkers.com is a multi-user blog powered by Wordpress (WP). Personally, I find that WP is an excellent blog platform. However, since our users have varying levels of web knowledge and computer literacy, we’ve had problems finding a good back-end interface for making posts. […]
