The Myth - The Movie
I got an SMS from WL at 10:30 asking me whether I wanted to catch the movie at KLCC today. Having seen the trailer a few days earlier, I had made it known that I wanted to watch the movie in the cinema. So obviously, I said yes. The plan was for us to meet at KLCC and watch the 13:20 screening. I left the house and arrived about 20 minutes before. Enough time for me to grab a bite to eat from BK before heading up to the cineplex.
It was then that disaster struck. Stomach aches are NOT myths. They come at the worst possible moments and make their presense felt in the most uncomfortable manner. Having experienced a few before, I knew better than to ignore it so I rushed to the gents inside the cineplex proper. There’s really no words to describe the relief. The downside was that I missed the opening of the movie (as I am wont to do as of late ).
On to the show: The Myth
From what I’ve read, the story is based on a Korean legend; the ‘Thousand Year Romance‘. The cast comprised of a collection of international stars, the biggest being Jackie Chan himself. Quick rundown of the cast that I can remember:
- Jackie Chan (Hong Kong/Holywood):
- Plays dual roles in the movie. The first, general Meng Yi, a great general in the 3rd century Qin Dynasty. The second as Dr. Jack Chan (interesting name), a present day archeologist (think Indiana Jones and Lara Croft) who’s been having recurring dreams about general Meng Yi and Li.
- Kim Hee-sun (Korea):
- Takes on the role of an ancient Korean princess (Li something or other) who has a relationship with both of Jackie’s characters. She falls in love with general Meng Yi after he saves her during the opening sequence of the movie and their love deepens during their journey to China. The movie’s theme is centered around this love story.
- Malika Sherawat (India):
- Now what is there to be said… to say she was simply eye candy would do her injustice but to say that she played a major role in the movie would be an overstatement. To her credit, there’s a very interesting fight sequence involving her, Jackie and several goofy guards.
- Tony Leung Ka Fai (Hong Kong):
- From what I gather, he plays William, an old friend and schoolmate(?) of Dr. Jack Chan. He’s the one that starts Jack on the mission to unveil the truth behind the myth.
Ok. That’s about all I can remember of the characters. The story itself was not bad, albeit with a very weak ending. I enjoyed the way the tale unfolds slowly through dreams and flashbacks of Jackie’s character. The action is what we’ve come to expect of Jackie; fast, furious and funny. I am proud to say I laughed alot during the movie and shed a tear during the more touching sequences. It was unfortunate that they ran out of steam towards the end of the show especially after the obvious effort that was put into beginning and middle. The cinematography and detailed combat scenes were truly amazing.
Overall, it was a good watch. Kudos to the cast and crew of The Myth. Thanks for a good time and keep on rolling out good movies.

Yes, the movie was indeed interesting, although the story telling was a little messy and the ending was definitely very thin…
