Dell Axim 51v

Woo Hoo… Dell has finally launched their latest PDA model , an upgrade from the previous Axim 50 series. Now I’ve been eyeing the Dell Axis 50v for the past month, as I’ve decided to upgrade from my current PIM ( My trusty diary) to a PDA. Initially I was going to get the lower end version , Dell Axim 50, but due to the latest launch, I’ve been drooling at the highest end model , Dell Axim 51v.

Currently the Dell Axim 50 has been retailing at RM 1099, approximately RM 400 cheaper then previously advertise, and they have been holding the price for nearly 3 weeks. I was wondering what Dell was up to . So this weekend I was pleasantly surprised to see 2 new models recently launched.

In actual fact, the Dell Axim 51 series, has no major hardware upgrade as compared to it’s predecessor, beyond the fact of Flash Memory upgrade. Furthermore, the price of the new Axims were approximately RM 200 - RM 600 more expensive. The Dell Axim 51 is RM 1288, while the Dell Axim 51v is retailing at RM 1,668. Quite a hefty increase on my initial budget. Here is a direct specs comparison of Dell’s Axims.

After reading a couple of reviews, I’ve come to the conclusion, that the major improvements to the newer series, is where the memory to run the PDA is kept, which is now located in the ROM, instead of the RAM, due to the new OS , Windows Mobile 5. With this change, the PDA battery runs approximately 25% longer then previously, and should you run out of juice, you’re not in much danger of losing all your precious data. Here is a very comprehensive review and comparison of Dell’s latest PDA found at Bargain PDA. This other review, I found to be very bias against Dell’s products, and should be taken with a pinch of salt, as it’s name would suggest , it is more of an HP Ipaq supporter.

For now I’ll just monitor Dell’s PDA site to see the promotional and pricing trends. I hope to get the PDA by the end of the year. After all, it is fabled that the best deals are around December. So I hope that I can wait and see.

Here is a tip, when buying items from Dell . Monitor the prices on their site on a weekly basis. You’ll be surprise at the price fluctuations and promotions. Proper and patient research , could yield you substantial savings as well as great gifts. I’ll keep you all updated when I finally buy the PDA.

Heh. RM 1688 for these specs is cheap enough. My advice : Buy now. There is no way it will drop to RM 1200++… and also, buy an extra battery with it :D

Chewxy : Sorry , why the extra battery . From the independent reviews, i got the impression that I’ll manage to have at least 4 hours of wireless surfing, or 6 hours basic usage. I did consider extra batts, but I find it cumbersome to have battteries around.

Gbyeow: I am a user too you know!!!

[…] This is the last of the brands that I looked at but definitely not the least. DELL has always been known to slash prices and give great offers. So I was anticipating a good bargain. That and the chance to look at DELL’s new Axim51v which has been the buzz for a while now since its release. So lets see what I found at DELL’s booth. […]
