Farewell Agent 86
Mention the words 86, Pat Lok and Hachi Roku and the first thing that would come to mind is the popular Initial D manga and animated series (currently in its fourth installment) and even more recently with Initial D the movie (starring Jay Chou). However, long before this series drifted its way onto tv screens in 1996, there was a different series that laid claim to the number ‘86′.
Get Smart - The original 86:
The irrepressible Agent 86, Maxwell Smart, has been entertaining fans the world over since the early 60’s. Along with the ever lovely Agent 99, they made their weekly stand against the evil organisation KAOS in the popular television series “Get Smart”. I recall following this series when it was screened on local channels in the late 80’s and wishing I had a nifty shoe phone like the one Max used in the show. The phrases “Missed it by that much…” and “the old … trick” was as much of our lives as say peanut butter and bread. Some friends and I still laugh at the jokes and scenes that we remember from the show even though we’ve retold it a thousand times over.
With such memories, it is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of Don Adams (Agent 86 Maxwell Smart) the star of “Get Smart”. He passed on to the great hunting ground in the sky on the 25th of September 2005 at the ripe old age of 82. I’ll leave the retelling of this great actor’s tale to the media. Suffice it to say that he will live on in the hearts of countless fans. You will be missed.
