Spitfire Grill and Stuff
Tuesday found WL and I having a continental and indian buffet dinner at a place called Spitfire. The restaurant and grill is located directly opposite Federal Hotel along Jalan Bukit Bintang. We had to drive around twice before finding a parking space along Jalan Aloh and taking a 5 minute walk to to the restaurant proper. The good news was that the parking was free. Anyway, we had read about the place from some flyers the night before and WL was looking forward to some roast lamb. Unfortunately, when we lifted the lids of the buffet spread, we didn’t find any lamb on the menu. Instead, here’s what they served:
- Soups of the day (Mushroom and Bosch)
- Freshly toasted garlic bread
- A small selection of fresh garden greens and cold salads
- Chicken and beef shishkebobs
- Beef lasagna
- Tender stewed beef slices
- Some nice rice that I forget the name of
- Spaghetti
- Fish fingers
- Stir fried mixed vegetables
- Red snapper in sweet and sour sauce
- Cream caramel pudding
- Assorted fruits
And that’s about it. So as you can see, the selection was a little small for a buffet spread. Its what you would expect from a catered buffet spread at a friend’s birthday party at home. However, I must say that although the selection was limited, the taste was great. The beef lasagna was by far the best I’ve tasted in a while now. The roast meats were tender and juicy inspite of being flamed over a grill. The cream caramel was yum. I wound up having two helpings of the mains followed by a round of soup and salads, topped off with lots of pudding and washed down with a tall glass of iced lemon tea while WL had her share with a glass of orange juice.
Food aside, we wound up sitting in the place for about two hours, chatting and watching people come and go. We found that the place had a fair number of foreign visitors. I think we were the only locals there. After a while, the operations director of the restaurant, Mr Rafi, came by to have a chat with us and ask how we were doing. It was nice that he took the time to make sure we were comfortable and all. We complained to him about the lack of lamb. He explained to us that the menu changed daily and went on to describe the irish stewed lamb that they served on Thursdays and Fridays which sounded absolutely delicious. However, I’ll reserve my comments until I’ve actually tasted it.
So overall, the place was nice albeit a little smoky from the grill, the food was great albeit a little on the meager side, and the people were nice. Would I recommend the place to people who are out for a good buffet? Not really, because of the small selection. Would I go back myself for a second round? Maybe for the ala carte menu or the lamb stew. Did I have a good time? Absolutely.
The good time, as it turned out, cost us RM57.73 in total. Here’s a breakdown and you can do the math:
- Buffet for two (2 x RM19.90 = RM39.80)
- Ice lemon tea (RM4.50)
- Fresh orange juice (RM5.90)
- +5% government tax
- +10% service tax
