Restaurant Review: Bangkok Jazz

I usually go home for dinner on a Thursday night. However, since WL noticed an ad in a magazine saying HSBC credit card holders were entitled to 50% dicounts at Bangkok Jazz Thai Restaurant and Bistro, we decided to give it a go. Neither WL nor I hold a HSBC cc, so we dragged her sister along. Forgive the photos if they are a little dark cause it was a fine dining restaurant with dim lighting and I didn’t dare to use too much flash.

The place is located in the newly opened Chulan Square along Jalan Raja Chulan (Opposite the T-junction where Jalan Bukit Bintang meets Jalan Raja Chulan and down the road from Prince Hotel). Since it was near our offices, we decided to take the 10 minute walk instead of driving over.

The building proper is divided into two sections; namely the Restaurant which is located on the top floor and the Bistro located on the ground floor. As the name suggests, the place plays host to Jazz bands from time to time. I’m not sure if anyone was playing and I didn’t bother to check the Bistro since I was dying of hunger. Instead, I headed straight up to the Restaurant where WL and her sister were waiting. After some contemplation, we finally placed our orders at 9.00pm and were served at 9.10pm (wow… that was fast). The service was obviously prompt and good. However, WL did complain that when she arrived, the first staff to greet her told her that “there is no guarantee” when asked how long it would take to be seated. That is bad for business, methinks. But that’s just one bad apple and we shan’t let it spoil the barrel.

We found out that the offer was actually a ‘buy one dish, free one dish’ type of offer and limitted to a predetermined selection/combination. There five sets available in all ranging in price from RM17.90 to RM52.90. The ala carte menu looked good as well with a wide selection of ‘authentic’ thai cuisines. We decided to go with a combination of ala carte and set. This is what we chose:

  • Tomyam Seafood Bowl (alacarte - 1 person): RM16.90
  • Mango Salad with Sofshell Crabs (alacarte): RM19.90
  • Green Curry Chicken (alacarte - small for 2 persons): RM15.90
  • Sizzzling River Prawns in Black Pepper Sauce on Hotplate (set 4): RM39.90
  • Deep Fried Siakap in 2 Flavour Sauce (set 4 - comes with mango salad also…)
  • Rice (x3): RM9.00
  • + 5% Govt and 10% Service Tax (For once, I was happy to pay the service tax!)

The river prawns were excellent and so was the fish. I was a little disappointed with the mango salad. Never liked tomyam to begin with so I won’t comment on that. The green curry was nice but a little heavy on the milk. WL loved it though. We found that the food we ordered was a little too much for three persons (perhaps just nice for four). The general theme of all the dishes was ‘hot and spicy‘. I’m still feeling the burn in my stomach after 2 hours and I don’t foresee a good night’s sleep. But for the food and service we had, I think its well worth a sleepless night and the RM116.84 bill. Heck, we got better (and perhaps more authentic food) at Bangkok Jazz than we did at Supatra Riverside Restaurant in Bangkok (visit our Bangkok blog for details).

As a side note, when we called for the bill, the waiter that served us had on an apron that had the words ‘Bangkok Dangerous‘ printed on it. I think that’s an apt description. I wanted to take a photo but he refused so I guess you’ll have to go see and experience it for yourself ;) Do I recommend this place? Definitely. Would I go again? Yes.
