Year 2006 Electricity Tariffs Increase?
My mom informed me this morning that Electricity Tariffs were going to increase today. So I read further into the matter to see what was going on.
As it turns out, my mom’s announcement was wrong. Tariffs will NOT increase today. Instead, it MAY increase as early as next year. This is according to this Star article on the subject. Speculations have been rampant about the possibility of an electricity tariffs revaluation. This latest admission by Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik (which made the news yesterday) only fuels these speculations and gives them form. I checked Malaysia’s Department of Energy, Communications and Multimedia and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) websites to see if there were any updates or insights on the matter but came back empty handed. I suppose that is to be expected. Don’t talk about it until everything is finalised.
How the new tariffs will differ from the old and what are the effects on the Malaysia population will only be seen when the final bill is submitted and approved. Until then, its all speculation from various parties. I for one am interested in what happens because of the recent government withdrawal of fuel subsidy. Over the year, the government has been slowly lowering their subsidy on petrol and this has resulted in a fairly high inflation rate throughout the country. The renewal of the electricity tariffs isn’t quite unexpected as many would see it as a side effect of rising fuel prices.
So until an official announcement is made, all we can do is wait. And when we do find out, we’ll just have to take it all in stride.
Public Service Announcement: Save water, save electricity, save fuel, save the environment. You have been warned.
