Long Unproductive Day

It is now 4.20am Sunday and its been a very long and unproductive day for me. It started at 11.30am Saturday and dragged its feet through 17 hours. That is 1,020 minutes of inactivity, 61,200 seconds of bum scratching. I think I’ve had an overdose of television today, watching it since 12.30 yesterday afternoon. Sure, I took a few breaks in between for a bath, lunch, and to go to church, but the rest of it was spent on the couch. Not that I’m complaining or anything…

I think the problem is simply that I’ve been unproductive for the longest time. I don’t like the feeling. Its worse that work has ground to a halt in the office as well. That’s the main reason why I was looking for a change in environment and gave notice for my resignation last week. It is depressing, and especially discouraging when you have ideas in your head that you would like to see to fruitation but you’re unable to do so.

There are some personal projects that I’ve been working on but never seem to be able to find the time or motivation to get on with it. The problem (I think) is that these two commodities never seem to come to me at the same moment. When I have loads of free time on my hands, I lack the drive to do the necessary. When my muse arrives, I find myself distracted by other things.

A fine example would be today. In the morning when I had oodles of time to kill, I decided to spend it watching cartoons, movies, and documentaries. I convinced myself that I needed a break (right…) and that I would get started when night fell. However, as they say about the best laid plans, mine was demolished. WL asked me to accompany her on her trip to the data centre for some database replication task that she was handling. Since she asked nice and I didn’t want her to go there alone, I agreed to go along. I knew that if I went, I would wind up doing nothing, but I felt compelled to keep her company. And so I went, with my trusty Game Boy Advance (GBA) by my side and a roll of Mentos in my pocket.

The Mentos didn’t last very long (all of 30 minutes) and I grew bored of the GBA after 10 minutes of button mashing. Fortunately for me, there was the good ole television to fall back on. Surprisingly, the data centre had an Astro subscription (probably to keep those poor sods working the graveyard shift entertained). Once again, I wound up lying on the couch, flicking through the channels for the longest time. Just to give you an idea of how long I was there, I actually managed to catch the 2 hour finale of The Amazing Race - Family Edition (which I missed), AND the epic movie Troy.

Anyway, WL completed most of what she set out to do and we left the data centre at 4.00am. I am home now and my brain is a little numb from all the television. If I continue like this, I shall become brain dead before Christmas. As such, with everyone reading this as my witness, I resolve not to watch any television next weekend. But until then, I think its time to put this day to sleep. Here’s to a productive week ahead. Cheers.
