Once Upon A Love Story

This is in continuation to my promotion on FGA’s Youth Church production of a Christmas Musical, entitled Once Upon A Love Story. Yesterday was the opening night, the first performance, the final trial. The storyline and plot of the theatrical production had been kept hushed up and under wraps (except for those participating and those who knew people). Yesterday, for the first time, the love story was revealed.

WL and I arrived at FGA KL minutes before the evening service was set to begin. We initially found ourselves seats in the main foyer but later decided to move up to the balcony when it was opened to public seating. I selected the first row of seats on the balcony to be closer to the stage. After a short worship service, the musical got underway.

Over the weeks, we’ve been watching the stage being transformed into the elaborate setup that was to be the backdrop for the play. And seeing it complete for the first time, I was impressed. It was during the performance that I discovered that they had actually made multiple tiers to the stage and the performers were actually going to dance on the rooftops of the makeshift houses.

I’ll admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the storyline when it was revealed. It did not take the traditional approach to the story of Jesus’ birth. Instead, the show focused in on the love story before the love story, the love story between Joseph and Mary. A fresh take indeed. And there was to be more surprises in store.

Whatever impressions you have on plays and Christmas productions, leave them at the entrance. Because there’ll be something delightfully new to tickle your senses at every turn. Borrowing music from various sources, they performed everything from percussions ala Stomp to Jazz, Blues to Rap, you name it, they did it. Did you know that they had S.M.S. during the olden days as well? I won’t spoil the surprise by telling you what it was. If you’re curious, you’ll just have to come and see it for yourself.

As I mentioned earlier, it was the first show. So there were some minor technical difficulties, such as malfunctioning mics, and minor timing issues. As they become comfortable, the performance will only improve. But that aside, I found it to be entertaining. The people involved had outdone themselves. I applaud them for the obvious effort that had gone into the making.

Once again, if you have nothing to do this coming Thursday (22nd, 8pm), Friday (23rd, 8pm), and Sunday (Christmas, 7.30am and 11am), why not come for the show. There will be a preshow reception on the 22nd and 23rd, starting at 6.30pm before the show commences at 8pm. Ask your friends to bring you. If you don’t know anyone who’s from FGA, leave your mark and an email address. I’ll contact you to make arrangements. The invitation is open, it is up to you to accept it. Come for fun, come for entertainment, come with an open heart. Who knows, you may find something you never knew you were missing.
