Google Pageranks And Such
Can’t believe that I’m actually writing this on a Christmas day. I should be out on the town and painting it red. But since I’m waiting for my ride and have a little free time, I thought I would share something about Google Pageranks (often referred to as PR, which I shall use from this point on). PR is Google’s way of telling people how important their pages/sites are to them. So very obviously, having a good PR means that your site is going to get more attention from Google. Call it a very grand, world wide popularity contest.
Having said that, Boredworkers.com has a PR of 5. It didn’t start out that way… In fact, as it is with most new sites, it was PR0 (zero, not pro). I was pleasantly surprised when my friend told me we were PR5 after Boredworkers.com participated in its first round of Google PR calculations (it usually happens once a month due to the long processing time). The reason for the surprise is that the site was fairly new at that time (about 2 weeks old), and there weren’t many posts or linkbacks for it to warrant such a rank (my naive view at that time).
For the past month or so, I’ve been trying to figure out a way to increase that PR. Sure, you might ask me whatever for, and go on to tell me that Boredworkers.com is just a blog and doesn’t need such a high rank. Well, for me, its just the thrill of the hunt (so to speak) and the wild egoistic side of me speaking. The simple truth is that I am trying to figure out what makes Google tick. Being able to do that would imply that the feat is replicable for other sites, which to me, is a great asset indeed.
With that mission in mind, I went out in search of resources that would help me achieve my goal (for the time being PR6). Some links follows, to articles and tools:
- Google Technology
- Pagerank Explained
- Pagerank Explained (Correctly, as claimed by the author)
- Future Pagerank (check your PR on all google servers)
- Google Pagerank Prediction (Another future pagerank tool)
Just take everything you read with a pinch of salt and you’ll be just fine. From what I’ve read so far, the key factors to PR is the incoming links from external sites, the way you link your sites internally, and the sites to which you link out to. All of these are of course subject to minor nuances and variables. The gist of the articles that I’ve read so far describe Google’s network of pages as a democratic community. Every page in the network with a base PR value of 1. Where they cast their votes (via linking) affects both their own PR and the PR of the page/site that they link to. You’ll have to read the articles to get a clearer picture.
Having learned that, I found that the linking layout of Boredworkers.com to be a little inefficient. Links were leaking out without linkbacks. Unimportant pages (such as the damned Wordpress login page) were getting a high PR rating while more important pages were not getting the attention they deserved. All this due to inefficient internal linking (which was partly my own fault for being naive in the first place).
With some insight on what is actually going on, I shall be revamping parts of Boredworkers.com to maximise its PR potential. So forgive me if external links get cut or something blows up in the process. Here’s to achieving a worthy PR. Support my cause by linking back to use (leave your mark if you would like to exchange links). Cheers, and once again, Merry Christmas ;)

I got three PR 5 sites and two PR 4 (bcos the sites are only a few months old). Heh, damn proud. Like you said, it is the hunt, the thrill and challenges. However, I notice that my site always come out tops in Google Malaysia. I heard that from PR 5 to PR 6 is very tough.
You are link-ed!

lilian: Thanks ;) Yes, it is tough to go from 5 to 6. You’ve got a lot of unique content pages which google likes… all 930+ of them. Maybe its time to submit to dmoz.com. My secondary mission at the moment is to overthrow PIKOM from the top spot for searches on PIKOM. You’re #2 at the moment. We were #2 during the week following the last fair because of a whole lot of articles on laptops.
WTJ: Wow… Mandarine blog. You wanna exchange? hehe
