PPS Double Pings?

Project Petaling Street (PPS for short) is one of the pinger services that I ping whenever I make a post. Recently, I’ve noticed that some double pings have been occuring over the service. Last night as I was going through the ping listing, I noticed two occurances. Personally, I consider double pinging to be rather embarassing, and a little rude. Its akin to badgering people and I hope that I never commit such a trespass (at least not conciously or on purpose). However, having said that, Boredworkers.com is guilty of double pinging (FireAngel pointed it out to me, and I noticed it again when she made a second post earlier this week). I wasn’t sure whether its a bug in PPS or a bug in WP or a bug with the browser that a blogger uses, so I went digging for an explanation.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to point fingers at anyone and call people names or anything. I’m just trying to figure out why double pings are occuring on PPS. I ping another (newly launched) service, Blogtal.com, but the double pings that I mentioned earlier, that Boredworkers.com is guilty of, did not appear there. So what then is the difference and why did it happen in the first place?

- PPS Double Ping Sample #2 -

Of the two posts with double pings in the PPS ping list, one of them was powered by Blogger while the other was running on Tabulas. Boredworkers.com is using the WordPress blog engine. So far, three different blog engines are commiting double pings on PPS. Taking that into account, I think we can safely rule out WP being the cause of the double ping. It is something else…

Of the two double pings I noticed, there really wasn’t anything in common AT ALL, or at least none that I could notice. Aside from the pings occuring in successively in two seperate minute units, there really isn’t much else. At first I thought that double pings would occur at a constant interval (e.g. once every 40+ posts), but that wasn’t the case. There just wasn’t enough data to go on. So I’ve decided to keep an eye on PPS and see if anything new turns up. If you would like to help, just take a screenshot of PPS when you notice a double ping and let me know.

In the meantime, I’ll just wait for FireAngel, or anyone of the current double pingers, to make another post. If its a double ping as well, then perhaps it might be a browser issue (so far the two double pings that Boredworkers.com has been guilty of have been from her posts… again, not pointing fingers and no offence intended).

That’s right, have some respect people! But that being said, I believe that the double pings that have been occuring recently are indeed accidental.

With Tabulas, users specify their own ping URLs; it could very well be that they’ve set both manual pings to services, as well as pinging to services like Ping-O-matic (which then pings out again).

The second URL shows a different minute, so it could also be that the user edited their content and re-pinged…

If I’m mistaken, please let me know (sadly, my understanding of ping services is not so current anymore).

No, I don’t believe that it was any particular blog engine is causing the double pings. However, double pings are not occuring with any consistency to make an educated guess on the cause. I suppose its best just to sit back and watch it happen for a while before making a conclussion.
