GotW: GameHouse Scrabble Deluxe

‘Tis the season to be jolly and all that. What a better way to while away some time with the family than to play some games, eh? This week’s GotW is a classic family boardgame brought to the computer desktop in all its animated glory. Put your hands together for Scrabble Deluxe by GameHouse.

What’s there to say about the game? The name itself, Scrabble, should speaks volumes. Play the classic family board game on your desktop. Go head to head against a computer opponent (named Maven), a human player in multiplayer mode, or yourself in solitaire mode.

When playing against Maven, you can choose from eight (8) diffirent difficulty levels ranging from novice to perfect. Maven gets smarter with each level. Be sure to have your wits about you and your vocabulary at the ready or he’ll crush your ego real quick. So far, I’ve beaten him in Expert and am gearing to have a go at him in Pro.

In multiplayer mode, you can play against another human opponent, in a hot-seat type of game. You share the same game screen and take turns laying your tiles. Unfortunately, there is no mechanism for hiding another player’s tiles until they are ready to look at it. The tiles swap the moment you click the submit button. So its going to be hard keeping your hand a secret from your opponent. The best way I can think of to achieve this is to play in Window mode and hide the tiles under the Windows taskbar. Unfortunately, that is rather impractical since you’ll have to drag the game screen around. And who’s to stop your opponent from cheating. I suppose we’ll just have to rely on good old trust and honesty. Would have been a nice feature to have though, where your tiles are hidden until you click a reveal button when you sit down.

You can play against yourself in Solitaire and multiplayer mode (by playing both sides). In Solitaire, you’re the only player and your aim is to get the highest possible score using the whole set of Scrabble tiles. Here, you can bring your best to the table and polish your skills in preparation to take on Maven in the next difficulty level.

Your progress is through the entire game tracked and you earn rating points based on the games you play, the score you achieve, and the opponents you defeat. Achieve enough points and you’ll be promoted to the next ranking. The game comes with a built in dictionary so you can look up the meaning of words without leafing through the hardcopy. Its a great way to brush up on your vocabulary and learn something new. Maven will surprise you with some obscure and odd words that you have never heard off in your life.

Please could you tell me how and where I could buy a CD of Scrabble game? I do not own a computer and play on public ones and friends’ computers. I move around the country a lot and so a game that I could load up from a disc would be ideal. Please help! I am a scrabbleaholic.
