Stranger things have happened. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is currently running promotions on its Fish Burgers. I have every intention of trying this new product. I’ll let you know what I think when I have. Until then, I shall reserve my judgement. However, one must wonder what is going through the minds of those in charge of the franchise.

KFC has traditionally always served (variations of) chicken products. This newest move either indicates desperation or innovation. I really can’t tell which. Maybe it is both. Maybe innovation IS the sign of desperation. Are they losing market share to other fastfood giants like McDonalds? Are they playing catchup? One might think so, considering that when McDonalds changed its image last year, KFC wasn’t too far behind.

My impression has always been that KFC is a wholesome family restaurant. Maybe they are now trying to shake that image in order to appeal to the younger generation. After years of milking the market, maybe they’ve come to realise that generation next is the future.

The past year has seen the franchise trying on different marketing strategies and products. Some successes, some failures. Personally, I think that their marketing campaigns are huge flops (read: their advertising sux!). But the food is still good (sometimes). But to be fair to the franchise, history has taught us lessons about stereotyping and broaching subjects deemed taboo. Take IBM for example when approached to work on the computer. They chose to forego that privilege saying that they were into manufacturing business machines (right…).

So maybe this isn’t such a bad move after all. Only time can tell. Who knows, maybe they’ll start marketing beef (and *gasp* pork) next. Lets see where this one takes us.
