Camera Repairs
Its been about a month since my camera’s CCD blacked out. Apparently, the Canon Powershot A75 is prone to such malfunctions. Its even documented that as a manufacturing defect on Canon’s part for using the CCD. When I called them to enquire about the CCD 3 weeks back, the lady on the other end told me that I would need to bring the camera in for repairs at their service centre (or Canon Customer Care Centre [C4… haha], as they call it). So after much delaying, I finally found the time to send it in.
The C4 in Malaysia (Klang Valley) is located at Peremba Square, Saujana Resort. Its quite a ways off my normal haunts. Good thing is that my colleague recently sent his own camera in for repairs, so I managed to get some directions off him. Driving up from KL along the Federal Highway, just take the Subang Airport turnoff. After the first underpass, there’ll be a turning to your left (just before a flyover). Take that turning and you’ll go into Saujana Resort. Take a 9 o’clock turn at the roundabout and follow the straight road. You’ll pass a Japanese School on your left before arriving at a group of three buildings (also on your left). That is Peremba Square and the Canon building is the green one in the middle of the group. Along the road to Saujana Resort, you’ll actually see some road signs and billboards telling you where the C4 is located so no worries about getting lost.
The process was quick and painless. I parked along the roadside (since it was such an out of the way place, I didn’t think that anyone would serve me a summons). There’s a large Canon sign on the green building so you can’t miss it. Walking in the main entrance, the C4 is to your left. There’s a showroom to the right but I didn’t take the time to explore it. Maybe I’ll have a look around and snap some pictures when they’ve fixed my camera.
Anyway, after taking a number and a quick 10 minute wait (there were a few people in line ahead of me), the lady at the counter asked me what was the problem. I told her that the display wasn’t working when I switched on the camera. She didn’t seem surprised at all which goes to show (I suppose) that the problem was a common one. After doing a quick inspection, she told me to write down my name and contact on a piece of paper. She keyed it in and gave me a service receipt and told me to checkback with them after two weeks (standard procedure).
I’ve heard of broken cameras being replaced with a newer model when they don’t have parts to make the repairs with. Well, obviously that would be a nice outcome of this situation. However, I’d be greatful if they were able to simply fix my camera and get it back to me in time for the Chinese New Year. They seem efficient enough to pull that off. I guess I’ll just have to wait for the outcome.

[…] Among other things, the Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) for the camera’s display blacked out on me once before during a friend’s wedding. But that’s the least of my problems. It was attributed to a known fault with the display but I got charged a hundred bucks for the repairs anyway. […]
