Ah Lok Cafe (SS2)
Well, as I was saying in the post before this, I was meeting up with some friends for drinks at SS2. The place we went to was Ah Lok Cafe. The place is located three (maybe four) shops down from Coffee Bean at SS2. WL says there’s another branch somewhere, but I really can’t recall. There’s also a local movie titled Ah Lok Cafe. Don’t know whether they are the same.
The interior is simple in design; sparce actually, tables spread out with ample space around them. The cafe is divided into smoking and non-smoking sections. Since I was the first to arrive and free to choose, I took the non-smoking which was located at the back of the cafe near the kitchen. One of my friends commented that there was quite a bit of echo because of the sparce furnishing. Since it was the rainy season and there weren’t many patrons, the air conditioning was a tad on the cold side.
The rest of the guys started arriving 10 minutes later. I was slow to decide on my drink since my eyes were focused on the television. Summer Vacation (starring Richie Ren and Sammy Cheng) was showing on 8TV. Yeah, watched it before but that doesn’t mean that the show is any less interesting.
Only after everyone had arrived and placed their orders did I make mine. I went for the Lemon Ribena (RM3.80). Since I hadn’t had my dinner yet, I also ordered a plate of Salted Egg Yolk Fried Rice (RM6.80). I asked whether they could upsize it (extra rice) but the waitress said that there was only one size. Fine… though I’m still wondering what was so difficult about adding an extra bowl of rice. I was fine with them charging me extra. Oh well, I guess they were going by the book and I didn’t really want to make a fuss about it. So a normal sized one it was.
Drinks arrived minutes later. They served them in those jar like mugs that have gained popularity as of late. Seems that every other cafe is serving them in those cups nowadays. My fried rice arrived not too long after that. Among other things, there was also an order of Nasi Lemak, French Toast, and Roti Bakar (Toasts). I didn’t try the other stuff but the Nasi Lemak didn’t look very appetising and I don’t think it was not worth the RM7.30 price tag.
The fried rice on the other hand was rather tasty. The serving size was not too small and at least it was not one of those precooked fried rice that they compact into a bowl shape and toss in the microwave. Standard fried rice with prawns, mixed vege, and topped with sliced cabbage. As the name suggests, there was also the salted egg yolk which added a nice flavour to it. I enjoyed it with some sambal belacan (very nice sambal by the way).
Since a friend of mine had a discount coupon (15% discount I think, which covers the tax), my drink and food set me back RM10.60. Not too bad, I suppose.
So, if you’re in the area and can’t decide on one of the many many coffee shops and cafes that dot the SS2 area, this might be a good one to try. I do recommend it. Nice place to hang out with friends for a little chit chat and the food is quite good (or at least mine was good). A little pricey but they do give discounts.
Ah Lok Cafe
At SS2 PJ, along the same row of shops as Coffee Bean. Sorry, I didn’t get the exact address and contact number.

EngLee: You can tell that, eh? hehe.
Jason: I think Chicken curry rice = Ah Lok Nasi Lemak. It didn’t look that good to me and the price just wasn’t right. They have a set menu but when we asked, they said it didn’t apply since it was around 10.00pm when we got there. Set is probably for lunch and dinner.
P.S.: Set menu is RM8.80 for soup + main course (select from 4 choices) + drink

No. Their chicken curry rice is not nasi lemak though. It comes with potatoes, chicken curry, apadam, tomatoes, cucumbers and white rice. Very nice. That time I had was around RM4, if not mistaken. Oh, they have set already har? I went there like during October.

Oh. In that case is probably different. The Ah Lok Nasi Lemak is with cucumber, papadam, chicken curry and sambal. RM7.30. Too rich for me.
Ya. Their set menu is printed, photostat and looks like ham choi paper. But set definitely more worth it than taking ala carte cause the main course + drink alone will be RM11+.
