Memoirs of a Geisha - The book

Considering the hype with the latest movie being released on Memoirs of a Geisha, I decided to obtain a copy of this book myself to have a read. I have often heard of this book in the past, with relatively good feedback on the book . Now many would see this as a “feminine” book to read, not suitable for a guy. In fact a colleague was surprised and amazed that I picked up this book .

Well , since deciding to obtain the book, I would say it was a good choice. This book is a well researched and written book, with the author able to bring the reader straight into the life of a geisha. As a reader, one can’t help but to be engrossed with the detailsa and descriptsion outline in the book, and you are directly transported back into the Geisha Days.

As a short sypnosis, the title of the book clearly suggest the contents of the book . It is the “Memoirs” of a highly successfull Geisha. The setting started about 15 years before the prewar days of Japan, about a little girl from a small fishing village who was brought to Kyoto to apprentice as a Geisha. The story highlights her frustration, obstacles and joys of life leading from being a little girl to being a highly successful Geisha in Kyoto.

Along the way, the books subtlely draws out the Economic conditions of Japan prior to World War 2, describing the emotions and sufferings of the People of Japan during those days. The author has been highly skilled in bringing the reader right into Kyoto , during those days, and as a reader you could almost hear the sounds of the Rickshaws, smell the noodle bars and see the tears of the Geisha.

Overall a very well written book, which is highly recommended to anyone. I wonder if the film would do the book justice. It would certainly be a shame if it didn’t .

A tip to readers, I recommend that you read the Prologue and Epilogue of the book. The “Thank You” Portion is highly important to read, especially the first paragraph. I will not tell you why, as it’ll spoil the book .
