The Chronicles of Narnia - The Witch , The Lion and The Wardrobe

Man I am really surprised that we have not reviewed this movie yet, considering what movie buffs we are here at Boredworkers. After all what better to relief your monotony of work, then to go catch a good movie, at the nearest Cinema.

Well, one of the Block buster movies released, just before the end of 2005, was Chronicles of Narnia : The Witch, The Lion and the Wardrobe. Now, to the “few” of you who are unfamiliar of the Chronicles of Narnia, it is actually a series of 6 books written by C.S. Lewis,

Abit of a backgrounder, C.S. Lewis is actually a reknown christian author, and hence many have drawn the conclusion that the Chronicles of Narnia have very strong biblical influence in the story line. An example in point is the last book, whereby draws on similarities in the last book of the bible, which is the book of Revelations.

Now back to the movie. This story is generally about 4 kids, during World War 2 , in England, where they were sent to live in the country side, to escape the German bombings of London. These kids, Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy (brother and sisters) went to a Professor’s house , which was a huge mansion with many rooms.

Well needless to say, the found a gateway into Narnia, via a Wardrobe and they entered into a new world. Narnia at that time as in the grips of a Wicked Witch, who made it always winter but never christmas. But with these 4 kids, a phrophecy was fulfilled, and the Witches reign was broken, with the help of Aslan ( the Lion) .

This story and the movie, is typically a children’s show , hence do not expect very deep sub plots. It is a basic story of Good Vs Evil and the inference from the bible was similar to the Easter story i.e. the death and resurrection of Jesus. Many have commented that the story line lack depth, and normally these comments were derived from people who have not read the book . Others have said this is a cross between Never Ending Story and Lord of the Rings. One should remember that this is a children story, and should actually look for the deeper meaning of the storyline.

Overall the movie did meet my expectations, considering that I have read the book numerous times. It was wonderful that the story line was in no way corrupted, and a very large majority of the story line kept intact. The characters of the story was well portrayed in the movie, which essentially brought the book to life.

Unfortunately there were some downside to the movie. Among it was the quality of the actors. Although the essence and character of the roles were kept, the Actors themselves were lacking a certain touch. At times, it seems these actors were in-experienced on the big screen. Another notable point was the cinematography. It was quite obvious that “blue screen” Technology was frequently used instead of onsite shooting like in the Lord of the Rings. This essentially gave the movie a more 2D perception of the overall scenary.

On a whole, I say this movie is a must watch, especially someone who has read the book. For those who have enjoyed the book as a child, you’ll find that movie delightful and enjoyable, with your favourite characters brought to life, just as you would have imagine them .

Ratings : 3.5 / 5 ( Although I still maintain a Must See Rating)

Pros : Kept to original story line.

Cons : Actors were slightly stiff and cinematography somewhat dissapointing.
