It's a combination of prefix, suffix and modifiers that buff your character. It depends on what your character needs. One of the best ways to get a great buffed item is to find an amulet and imbue it in town (you can do the same for any item but amulets are the cheapest to imbue). This will add one or more bonuses (be careful as the imbue process may also add a curse) to the original item. Just keep repeating the process until you've run out of money. There's no limit to the number of bonuses that can be added to an item.
