Confirm Broken (Computer Woes)
Enrii asked me a very good question yesterday about my graphics card, “Is the fan still working?“. I told him my graphics card didn’t have a fan, only a heatsink. But I wasn’t very certain because the graphics card was inherited from WL and I never paid it much attention. My old Riva TNT didn’t have a fan so I assumed the same was true for the Riva TNT2. Well, as it turns out, I was wrong.
When I got home yesterday, the computer totally 100% refused to boot up. So I opened up the casing to take a look. Now I haven’t done so in a long while, ever since leaving university. I’ve had no reason to open it up until now. Inside it was dusty and dirty and black. Should probably spend some time wiping it down one of these days.
Anyway, when I checked on the graphics card, I found that it did indeed have a cooling fan attached. I tried turning the fan to see if it was still servicable. Usually, the fan will move freely on its bearings. This one was stiff and practically locked in place. I tried the power and the fan refused to turn. So, very obviously, the fan was dead and most likely the graphics card was dead as well. Overheated probably.
Oh yeah, a correction to the last article. WL upgraded her graphics card to a 128MB GeForce FX5200. Not a GeForce FX4200. My bad.
