GotW: GameHouse Super Collapse! II
With my computer in the drydocks at home, this one almost didn’t make it. But after scratching around for a bit, I finally found a game that I wouldn’t mind recommending to the rest of the world. That’s why this week’s game of the week is Super Collapse! II by GameHouse.
As the name suggests, this is a sequel to a fairly successful game with the same title. As far as sequels go, this one is better than the predecessor. Like most mini games out there, this one banks on the match-three game concept. In this particular case, you try to clear a field of square boxes stacked one on top of the other. Clicking a combination of three or more boxes of the same colour will blow them out of the game and cause the boxes around them to collapse into each other (hence the name Super Collapse).
There are four different game modes to choose from; namely Collapse! Traditional, Collapse! Puzzle, Collapse! Relapse, and Collapse! Strategy. Each game mode, although using the same game concept, is unique in its gameplay and requires a different approach.
Collapse! Traditional is the old game that old players have come to know and love. The aim of the game is to clear the boxes before they reach the top of the game field. After a certain time interval, a new line of boxes will be pushed in from the bottom. To clear a stage, players need to survive and clear a fixed number of lines. Sounds easy, but as the game progresses, it gets tougher. The interval between lines shorten as the level gets higher. While it may start out slow, it will turn into a clicking frenzy as you try to survive while new lines continue to be introduced faster than you can clear them.
Collapse! Puzzle requires players to blow up every box on the game field. Do so and you move on to the next puzzle. Leave a box hanging and its game over. Puzzles may have more than one solution, with some solutions awarding the player higher scores than others. Can you optimise your score and lay claim to being the best Collapse! puzzler alive? This game mode will tease your mind and force you to put on your thinking cap.
Collapse! Relapse adds a new variable to the game play. Now instead of blocks coming up from the bottom, they are also coming from the top of the game field. Watch both sides and keep them from meeting in the middle. If they do, they’ll break and end the game. Like Collapse! Traditional, you’ll need to survive a certain number of lines to win the stage and move to the next.
Collapse! Strategy is the final game mode available. You’ll still need to clear a fixed number of lines. However, there’s a new twist. Instead of pushing in a new row of boxes after a given time interval, new blocks will rise with every move you make. Frenzied clicking is so passe. Now you’ll have to think, strategise, and plan your next move, factoring in the moves you’ll be making next. Click without thinking or make a mistake, and you’ll soon find yourself overwhelmed by the stacking blocks.
To help you clear the blocks faster, there are various Coloured bombs and the Super bomb. Coloured bombs will detonate all blocks of the corresponding colour that are currently on the playing field. The super bomb will clear a radius of blocks all around it.
But don’t get too comfortable. To hamper your game, some obstacles may be introduced with each rising row of blocks. Gravity blocks pull blocks towards it and away from their expected paths. Watch out for it and don’t count on things going the way you planned when this nifty little block comes into play. There’s also the Platform block and the Indestructible block. The difference is that the former does not move while the latter will collapse with other blocks. Both of them stick out like sore thumbs and will hamper your strategy. All obstacle blocks are indestructible except with the use of a super bomb.
There are bonus levels in the different game modes. Additionally, the bigger the number of blocks you detonate in a single move, the higher the score that will be awarded. So put on your best game face, rack up the highest score possible, and lay claim to bragging rights.
