Double Header: Fantastic Four Vs. Into The Blue

Was catching up on some ‘old’ movies last week. Among them, I watched the movie adaptation of Marvel Comic’s Fantastic Four and Into The Blue. I had mixed feelings about the movies. While the movies fulfilled some expectations, they were also somewhat disappointing in other aspects.

Now if you haven’t yet noticed, the two movies have something in common. If your brain is screaming Jessica Alba, then you’ve got a head for trivia. Yes, the very hot and chique looking Jessica Alba stars in both the movies. Which was one of the reasons that prompted me to watch them in the first place.

Fantastic Four
To me, Fantastic Four was so so in terms of story. They established the origins of the superhero team and stuck close to the actual story line. They established the rivalry between our heroes and their nemesis Dr. Doom. And then we get to see the conflict that arises between the heroes and villain. Standard run off the mill superheroing stuff.

The highlight of the movie is probably when Jessica Alba as Invisible Woman goes invisible, strips down to her knickers, and reappears again. Considering that that is the high point, there’s little else to be said about the rest of the show.

I mean the action is so so. Yes, the final fight scene is a little dramatic, but it is so cliched and we’ve seen it done in so many other movies that I found it rather anticlimatic. The movie just didn’t draw me into it as much as I would have liked. Maybe I was just expecting too much. Or maybe I’m just too familiar with the Fantastic Four story that the movie didn’t hold any surprises for me.

Into The Blue
Another chique movie. I actually like this one better than Fantastic Four. Although the movie was a little ‘used’ as well, at least there were still some twists in it that I didn’t expect. The movie is focused around a group of deep sea treasure hunters (or do they call them prospectors?) who find the motherload of all sunken treasures; the Zephelyn. At the same time, they also stumble across a cargo plane full of cocaine. The race is then on to see if they can stake claim to the sunken ship before the authorities (or worse, the drug lord who owns the cocaine) finds out about the other ‘treasure’.

Unfortunately, our heroes find themselves in a catch 22 situation. They are sitting on top of a treasure throve but they are flat broke and need money to continue with the hunt. They wind up taking some of the cocaine and trying to barter it for some money with the local dealers. That’s when things take a turn for the worse. Some twists in the story and we find our heroes escaping from the drug traffickers, killing all the baddies, and getting the treasure in the process. A rather unbelievable ending, but an ending nonetheless.

Here’s another movie where you get to see Jessica Alba in all her tanned and toned glory, wearing little more than a skimpy bikini. Navin put it perfectly when he said that she has “the best tan ever”. It is no wonder that she is #1 in AskMen.com’s list of top 99 most desirable women of 2006 (she was previously #78).

Overall, I found both movies to be mediocre in terms of story. If I had to choose one, I would go with “Into The Blue”. Watch them for the eye candy but don’t expect much else. Fans of Jessica Alba will get an eyeful and should be happy with the productions.
