Insider: MAS Travel Fair 2006 Ticket Prices
Alrighty then, this one is oven fresh. For those of you who just can’t wait for the prices to be released on the MAS Travel Fair 2006 website, here’s the insider scoop. I have with me a list of the yet-to-be-released (hence unofficial) discounted prices of flight tickets that are to be sold during the 10 day travel fair. Note though that I only have the ticket prices. For packages and the like, you’ll have to call up the various participating travel agents to find out or wait for the official release tomorrow.

Looking at the price list below, I found that some of the tickets are a bargain. The flight to Padang looks good to me. But I suppose you guys should know how to make your own comparisons and planning. As I mentioned earlier, the official list will be out in another nine hours. Once that comes out, you still have 24 hours to formulate your plans. This just gives you a little head start :)

Some notes about the prices listed below:
- They are unofficial
- Flights listed are direct flights.
- Prices apply to Economy Class only.
- Tickets are valid for a four month period ending 30th June 2006
- Prices are for one way trip.
- Tickets are sold on a first-come-first-served basis.
- There are three classes
tierswith increasingly expensive ticket prices. - Prices DO NOT include airport tax and fuel surcharges.
- Bookings officially start at 12 midnight 17th February 2006.
Tickets will be sold according to availability. Once the tickets in one tier is sold out, the tickets for the next tier will be open.Seems that my understanding was skewed. The three classes actually reflect the restrictions that are placed on the tickets. The more expensive the ticket, the less the restriction. M-Class fares apply for when the return trip is scheduled for after 30th June 2006 and are not valid to be sold on a one-way basis.

Updated because my original understanding was skewed. The prices remain the same, only that it is conceptually different. My apologies for any inconvenience.

Wingz: Its actually a classification of the tickets (from cheapest to most expensive). From what I understood from looking at the price list, I assume that tier-1 tickets will be sold first. When they are sold out, tier-2 tickets will be on sale. When those go out, then tier-3. And when those go out, well, you’re out of luck.
Its much like Air Asia’s ticketing quota and class system, where the price of tickets from one class is more expensive than the class before it.
I could be wrong though.

Three ways of doing it:
1. Go through MAS website
2. Call participating travel agents (list will be available at midnight 16-02-06)
3. Call MAS hotline

Updated. Wingz, tiers no longer apply. I was misled in my understanding. The different fare classes actually depends on the restrictions applied.
The L-Class with a load of restrictions, while the Q-Class is less restrictive but with security surcharges (Trips to Hong Kong on the Q-Class table are minus the security surcharges so don’t be surprised if they charge you more.
The M-Class is an open ticket in case you are planning your return trip after the validity period of 30th June 2006. The fare only applies on round-trip tickets and are not to be sold one-way.
Take note of these changes. Otherwise, the ticketing fares remain the same and are valid (accurate?) when I cross reference it to the circulars and memos that I have since received from my office admin and travel agents.

I’ve been following the MAS Travel Fair since it started. Believe me… the special fares this year are not at all special. Take for example.. Perth. L class ticket cost 699 per way x 2 = 1398 + 710 tax = 2108. Last year return ticket cost 688 + 356 = 1044!! How special can that be. MAS is doing it Air Asia style this year. Once the L class is taken up..you got to go for Q class fare, which is double the price. Thanks to the clever ‘dunggu’ at MAS who came up with this idea. I’ve lost interest this year….

jaytea: Yes, the ‘L’ and ‘Q’ classes IS indeed tiered. IMHO, they overcomplicated things.
Manja: Thanks to the clever ‘dunggu’ at MAS who came up with this idea.
Quote:
… I was told by an MAS Manager that they recruited the guy who organises and manages AIR ASIA’s ticket sales (or something akin to that). Bottom line, same guy, same mistakes…

If what sanjiv says is true, the clever dungu at MAS would be the same clever dungu from Air Asia.

Difference is…MAS is not AirAsia. Can’t say much about Air Asia. You pay cheap…you fly cheap. But still…it gets you to the same place.

Yeah. That’s so true. Comparing MAS with Air Asia isn’t exactly comparing apple to apple. So the ticketing system that works for AA might not work for MAS. Following the same line of reasoning, the public have been unfairly comparing the two companies. For example, it is unfair for the public to expect MAS to offer prices as low as AA. They are alrady tight for money, so its a bit unrealistic to expect them to give out huge discounts.
Incidentally, one of the plans for MAS’s turnaround is to increase airfare and flight loading. That’s trying to break all the rules of logic. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

[…] To be totally honest, I haven’t yet had the chance to fully digest the published rates. However, since many people were asking about MAS prices to London, they are listed as RM999.00 onwards. That’s slightly cheaper than last year (2006)’s fare which started at RM1099.00. That is of course subject to availability, the newly introduced MAS tiered ticketing system, and excludes fuel surchage and taxes (RM965.00). That means a return ticket to London would set you back approximately RM2963.00. […]
