Taiwan House Restaurant

Last Tuesday was Valentines day. I think that V-day is overrated and overcomercialised. It is one of those days that businessmen and the sales team relish. It is one of those days that everything is sold at a premium, when roses, chocolates, and gifts are sold at tripple the normal going rate. It is strange how some couples are willing to splurge their savings on a day that, except for the name, is like any other day. Me, I was being unromantic and cutting down on costs.

I left my office at 5.30pm and got caught in one of the worse jams I’ve experienced in a while now. It was half past eight when I finally picked WL up at her office. After enduring three hours of rush hour traffic, made worse by torrential rains, fallen over trees, and a desperate need to pee, I wasn’t exactly in the best of moods.

My stomach was screaming bloody murder for the lack of food. For no particular reason, I had a craving for western food. However, the traffic showed no signs easing and the report over the radio said that it would take at least another two hours to clear. Since we were both hungry, we agreed to stop off at Ampang Point and grab a simple meal.

We rounded the place a few times and identified two possibilities. Not being able to choose between the two, we decided that we would share a bowl of something at both places!

First stop was a shop tucked away in a corner on the first floor of the shopping complex called Taiwan House. The name suggests that it serves taiwanese food. After browsing the menu for a bit, we ordered the Taiwanese Beef Dry Glass Noodles (Kon Lo Tong Fun with Stewed Beef). It was a set meal which came with a bowl of soup and a choice of beverage (coffee, tea, or soft drink). I was also interested in the Taiwanese pizza that they had on the menu. Unfortunately for me, they only serve that during tea time.

Minutes after placing our order, they served us our main course in a large bowl (the type that WL loves). The glass noodles came with boiled potatoes and vegetables, and a good portion of stewed beef.

The beef was surprisingly tender. It was sufficiently stewed that the flesh was crumbly and melted in your mouth. I found that the boiled potatoes and vegetables looked very plain and odd with the meal (call me a green vegetable type of guy). However they turned out to be the perfect match as the sweet and plain taste of the vegetables blended in well with the strong flavours of the beef.

We took turns with the chopsticks and overlarge spoon and wolfed down the food. In terms of portion, it was big enough that I found myself quite full inspite of having split it evenly (no, I didn’t eat any more than she did) with WL.

After the quick meal, we headed over to the other restaurant that had caught our interest. Unfortunately we were out of luck as it was closing for the night. Too bad, I suppose.

So yeah, an unromantic V-day on my part. But a satisfied stomach nonetheless. The shared meal at Taiwan House cost us RM9.45 inclusinve of tax. It is a little bit on the pricey side, for something as simple as beef noodles but, to their credit, the food they serve is quite tasty. I definitely recommend the restaurant, the next time you’re in the area.

P.S.: If you are ever there during tea time, please do try the Taiwanese pizza and let me know how it tastes just so I don’t wind up wasting my time ;)

Taiwan House is yummy - I love the beef soup noodles. They also have another outlet outside at the shophouses. What was the other place you wanted to try? Is it the Japanese sushi bar?

Yup. The sushi bar on the same floor. But shush. That’s a secret review for another day ;)

Thinking about it is making me hungry.

Octopus Sushi? Dat place is the bomb man. At least for the price.

You can get better Jap and Thai food elsewhere, but hey, RM15 for a yummylicious Snapper Batayaki set?! Will run you at least RM20 anywhere else, if you can even find snapper on the menu.

The Thai choices are not too bad either.

G: Ho ho. Yeah, that’s the one ;) I’ve actually almost forgotten about it. Good thing you reminded me :D Time to pay them a visit.
