PIKOM PC Fair 2006

Updated PIKOM PC Fair 2006 (II) schedule

It’s that time of the year again. In a few weeks time, we’ll see the first PC Fair of the year organised by PIKOM. As with previous PC Fairs, there will be exhibitions in various locations across Malaysia.

Unofficial Exhibit List

Miri Indoor Stadium, Miri

The Kuala Lumpur chapter of the PC Fair is bigger than ever. Last year, the fair occupied Halls 1 through 5, of the newly opened Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The exhibition space was humungous, and took me at least two hours to walk all five halls. This year, the fair has spilled out of the convention halls into the Ballrooms, Banquet Hall, and Conference Rooms! That’s a whole lot more real estate to cover and at least another hour’s worth of walking. So make sure you’ve got your most comfortable pair of shoes on when you visit.

Below are the hall and exhibit layouts for the event at KL Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur. These are correct as of 28 March 2006. For more information on other locations and details on the event, refer to PIKOM’s website and information page on the upcoming event.

Palms, PDAs, and handhelds were the in thing during the previous PC Fair while the one prior to that, it was MP3 and MP4 players. I wonder what the hot item will be this time round. For me, it will once again be notebooks and laptops. I’ve been keeping tabs on the prices since the last PC Fair and it hasn’t changed much. If there’s a cool notebook out there and the price is right, I might just make a purchase. We’ll see. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. How about you? What are you keeping your eyes open for?

To those who can’t make it but would like to know the prices, leave a message on what you’re looking for and I’ll check it out for you. As for those who will be going, see you there ;)

My budget is RM2,000 for notebook. I was told I can find one during the Fair but I have no luck during my previous visit last year. Can I get the same this time and what are the brands?

  3. Jian Said,

Hie there. I am planning to get a laptop soon and I am lost when I heard lots of
comments on which brand I should consider. My budget is around RM 4k maybe almost 5k. I just want a laptop with good graphics card , a considerable amount of RAM , core duo processor , about 80GB hard disk and a dual layer dvd writer..However, from the ads and brochure I saw, most of them doesn’t fit in my list. Even if there is, they included some other stuff which I don’t think its neccessary…eg. Aspire 5562WXMi (RM4788)…I think it would be a whole lot cheaper without the bluetooth thingy, card reader adn etc.
Since I am living in Penang, my relatives advised me to get Dell (good and quick service) but when I customised the laptop according to the specification I wanted, it turns out to be around RM5600. I am in a dilemma now…

  4. gbyeow Said,

    April 4, 2006 @ 1:52 am

zulhelmie: 2k is going to be tough for a notebook, especially a new one. You can probably squeeze it out of a barebones minimum DELL machine running off the old celeron mobile processor. But to answer your question, yes, you will be able to find a 2k notebook at the fair but be warned that these will probably turn out to be second hand reconditioned machines. Be especially cautious of machines with higher end specs. The next question then is whether you’re looking for a brand new machine or second hand?

Jian: For 4k or 5k, you can get a decent machine from Acer. They are packaged with the best graphics cards at the moment with a Radeon mobile. The other notebooks usually just run off the built in graphics from the core processor. While I don’t have much use for bluetooth at the moment, I would stick with it. You never know what you might need it for in the future. However, you can opt to drop it off the list for a price reduction.

You can probably get a good Acer laptop with the Radeon, 1GB ram, duo processor and 80GB HD for under 5k. But I’m not sure about the DVD writer though. The sad part about Acers is that it runs HOT. You’ll have an american breakfast if you work with it on your lap for too long.

Your relative is right. DELL probably has the best service record I’ve seen. The bad part about DELL notebooks is that they are SUPER heavy with the full blown power notebooks weighing in at 3kg+. But that’s the tradeoff you’ll have to make for more processing power. The slimmer models run off the super energy saver chips that have a capped CPU speed. Speed = power and vice versa.

Side notes: Duo cores are excellent for multitasking jobs, but at the moment, the gaming scene has not picked up and taken advantage of it yet. It is also recommended to have 750MB of RAM to run the new Windows Vista. If you’re opting for a duo core, I assume you’re headed in that direction.

  5. Jian Said,

    April 4, 2006 @ 2:05 am

hm…I dun really mind if its heavy…hey lighter = less performance rite?…is there anyway I can get DELL and have a good graphics card? hmm wat about Inspiron 9400? After customising it, its RM5431…too much?

  6. gbyeow Said,

    April 4, 2006 @ 11:33 am

Like I said, the lighter cores drains the batteries slower. Running the CPU at higher speeds requires more power and hence a bigger battery. The battery contributes a majority of the overall weight. So yes. Lighter = smaller battery = less performance.

RM5431 for an Inspiron 9400? That would be the basic Inspiron 9400 + 1.83 GHz, 2MB Cache, 667 MHz FSB + 2 x 512MB DDR2 (total 1GB) + ATI Mobility Radeon 256MB upgrades? Without carry case, 1 year warranty, etc. It feels kinda pricey. DELL prices usually don’t change much during PC Fair. You’ll get some gifts thrown in but not much of a discount especially since you’re already getting a RM350 rebate when purchasing online.

Last year’s Acer with Intel Pentium M 750 1.8GHz, 533 MHz 2MB L2 cache +14.1 WXGA wide TFT LCD + ATI Mobility Radeon X700 + 80GB HDD + DVD burner + Bluetooth 6-1 Card reader + 1 x 1GB DDR2 + XP Pro + Battery pack for 6 hours battery life. It was going for about 5k with alot of free gifts thrown in. The retail price was RM5688. But this is the old non-duo core CPU. The duo core is still relatively new and I haven’t spent much time checking it out yet.

In case you’re worried about Acer service, they have one in Penang:
No. 360 Ground Floor, Jalan Dato Keramat,
    10150 Penang
    Tel: 04-227 5711 Fax: 04-229 2745

I advice checking out the prices at the fair first but these are the two brands that I would consider for the specs that you want. On a side note, I checked prices after the fair and they remained the same. Again, the only difference being the freebies that they give you.

I need to know about the brand of hard-disk and prices and if can which booth and also specs. I would love your recommendation about the hard disk as well. My budget is between 300-500 or more a bit only. THanks

  9. gbyeow Said,

    April 7, 2006 @ 1:03 am

300-500? That’s a pretty big budget for a harddisk. Brandwise, the popular choices are Maxtor, Western Digital (WD), and Seagate. I would personally go with a WD. From experience, they are a lot more reliable.

Here are somethings that you need to consider
    Size: 40GB - 400GB
    Speed: 7200rpm or 10000rpm
    Buffer: 2MB or 8MB
    Connection: Serial ATA or IDE

The connection is important. While the newer motherboards supports SATA, the older ones might not. You’ll have to check whether yours supports it and whether you want it or not. No point buying a harddisk and discovering that it won’t work with your machine. Also, you’ll have to double check how big a harddisk your motherboard can support. For both these cases, its sufficient to note the model of your motherboard. The salesperson usually knows enough about the models to tell you whether something is supported or not.

Please refer to Hardware Zone for the price listing of Western Digital harddisks. These prices are pre-PIKOM PC Fair prices and may drop during the fair. Use it as a guideline to decide on which model you wish to buy.

The standard entry level harddisk at the moment is one with 80GB, 2MB buffer, 7200rpm. That should cost you about RM175.00. A higher-end WD 250GB SATA drive with 8MB buffer costs RM355.00.

MTEC normally has good bargains. They are located at booths 137, 138, and 452. If you need further clarification and/or suggestions, feel free to leave a message.

I wonder if DELL and SONY will display their latest laptops… i.e. Latitude D820,Precision M90 and Sony SZ series. These are very cool lappie la

  11. gbyeow Said,

    April 12, 2006 @ 12:11 am

I’m quite sure Sony will be displaying their best. They usually do. Last year, I was kinda taken in by the specs of their U-series Vaio (the mini portable one) but was disappointed when I saw the actual model (had to run over to Sony Wings to see it). However, C20 has displaced Sony from its usual main entrance booth at KLCC this time around. Wonder if this means anything.

As for DELL. Well, they usually put out their cheapest models. I’m usually not very excited about DELL models. You almost always get a barebones machine and customisation will usually cost you bombs. And their notebooks are blardy heavy. But who knows, maybe I’ll find one that suits my taste this year :)

  12. Jian Said,

    April 19, 2006 @ 12:05 pm

I waited and Dell’s price drop a little and more free stuff.I bought Inspiron 6400. RM4258 (512 ram, dell backpack,256mb ati radeon x1400, 3 year CC) I am getting my ram from outside shop, trade in 512mb for 2 sticks of 1gb ram RM534. Heard a lot of ppl buying Dell. I can’t believe Dell actually decreases price for KL PCFair only..haiz…So my lappy ok?

  13. gbyeow Said,

    April 19, 2006 @ 1:26 pm

Was at DELL’s booth and they had pretty good offers. Yeah, you’re right. I was quite surprised that they dropped the price somemore. They usually don’t cause the online offers come with additional cash rebates. They had the same offers at the fair plus some extras. Those who purchased their machines online must be cursing by now.

That’s not a bad deal actually. But does DELL warranty continue to cover you if you swap out the old RAM without buying theirs? You better check just to be sure. Don’t want to have purchased 3 years CC but wind up having it void.

Don’t know why but this year’s PC Fair just didn’t interest me. I went, I saw, I didn’t get excited. All the same stuff with only some price difference. Noted the prices but haven’t taken the time to evaluate them yet.

  14. Jian Said,

    April 21, 2006 @ 2:55 pm

Well I saw Dell’s CC agreement and they do not cover the RAM. So i guess it doesn’t void the warranty. I will call and check with them again. It voids the warranty if u changed the hardisk thats for sure. Read a lot about Vista recently…and an online article said lappies bought in 2006 are left with 36.5% of their life cycle. Sad…Microsoft surely knows how to suck the money outta us.

  15. gbyeow Said,

    April 21, 2006 @ 6:42 pm

Yeah. It takes alot to run Vista. And they keep delaying it which means by the time it finally comes out, it will require even more resources. You’ll definitely need that RAM upgrade if you’re heading in that direction. Throw in the new MS Office with their fancy ‘ribbon’ and you’ll need even more. Personally, I’m sticking with Win2k/XP for as long as it takes. I don’t see myself upgrading my PC anytime soon. Might get a notebook but that depends on how well I’m holding up financially.

  16. Jian Said,

    April 23, 2006 @ 1:53 am

oh my gosh…By then 2GB is considered minimum…I can’t imagine that…where are we gonna squeeze our cash from?…yikes…besides that, i also saw an article saying the RAM prices might increase due to high demand. (But they didn’t say low supply…) Could it be possible? Did u saw Dell’s website? I got a shock when I saw the freebies they throw in. But in the end found out that 6400 that comes with a decent 3D card is not available. Meaning they were selling like hot cakes! Has this occured before? My fren’s gonna kick herself when she reads about it. She was playing the waiting game. Do u think another model like 6400 will be released any time soon? I don’t see other brands offering similar spec lappies with competitive price. :P

  17. gbyeow Said,

    April 23, 2006 @ 2:25 am

Actually, I’m playing the waiting game as well. But for different reason.

Anyway, as a personal opinion, I think prices of RAM may increase when Vista eventually comes out. High demand eventually leads to low supply. Vendors will take the opportunity to charge more and blame it on the supply/demand. While factories may produce more to meet demand, we don’t really know whether it is happening or not and have to take the vendor’s word for it. That’s the problem with being the uneducated end consumer. You have to take the word of the middle man at face value and more often than not, the middle man is out to squeeze the maximum amount of profit from you.

Yes it has happened before when a product becomes unavailable because of demand. I remember last PC fair when I was looking for a particular notebook and it was all sold out. Even the show unit had been carted away by the buyer and the waiting list was about 1 month. Its not surprising really. The computer industry is not that much different from cars. They can only produce that many units and if the demand is higher than the production, then its going to take a while (in other words out of stock). Prices of finished goods (e.g. notebooks) usually do not fluctuate that much except for currency exchange. Its the parts (usually storage such as RAM and harddisks) that are volatile and fluctuate depending on supply and demand.

I was very surprised with DELL’s offers. And you’re right. They were probably the best available at this April fair. I expect to see some better offers and specs coming soon, especially when the duo core becomes more common. It is still relatively new at the moment and alot of the notebooks being sold are still old stock (M) processors.

  18. Jian Said,

    April 23, 2006 @ 1:46 pm

Ekkks! 1 month??? Oh no…I think I have to wait even longer this time…so much for being an early bird buyer. Can’t they giv me priority 1st?hehehe…Oh in ur last paragraph, do u mean prices will drop slightly for coming soon models? I completely forgot that prices of the processors will decrease after some time…Yup many Pentium M lappies out there as well as centrino solo core ones…My friends bought a Toshiba lappy for RM3500…not sure about the specs tho. As the matter of fact, all my friends bought Toshiba! Why eh? They can’t tell me why they buy Toshiba either. Only me opting for Dell.

  19. gbyeow Said,

    April 23, 2006 @ 11:38 pm

What I meant was that models with better specs will be out soon. I suspect that the prices won’t change much. I was comparing prices earlier this week from the brochures I acquired during the fair and found little difference between the this fair and the last one in four months back. That’s quite a surprise especially with the new Duo Cores coming into play.

As for why a number of people chose Toshiba over DELL. I think Toshiba threw in quite a number of free gifts. Plus the fact that the Toshiba machines looks way COOLER!

  20. Jian Said,

    April 24, 2006 @ 1:25 pm

Hm I just chatted with my friends who bought the Toshiba lappies. One had scrathes on it and the some keyboard keys are coming out. The other had rust . Lappy…rust? Unimaginable.

PS: Thanz for all the infos u chipped in ur comments.

  21. gbyeow Said,

    April 24, 2006 @ 4:34 pm

Jian: Rust? SHIT! Sure it wasn’t a reconditioned unit? My goodness… RUST! If that’s the case, I take back my words about Toshiba notebooks looking cooler. Lol. What’s cool about rust?!

You’re most welcome. Needless to say that I benefitted from your comments, questions, and feedback as well. I would have neither looked nor thought as hard about some things if no one asked.

If you ever want to chit chat, you know where to find me ;)

  22. Jian Said,

    April 25, 2006 @ 4:35 pm

Hohoho, k. I just visited the shop with my friends and have a look at their lappies. Satelite M55 cool looking meh? I couldn’t believe my friends paid so much for that old model. RM3500 and some other freebies thrown in by the shop. Now they having problems with the lappies in terms of the shops service and the product replacement. According to that guy, he is going to get a new unit and transfer their hardisk to the new unit. I was like huh? Then i asked him if it could void the warranty. And he said no and said that as long as the serial number is still there, its fine. I think they were a little too rush in buying the lappies. Oh yeah, how do you know if the appy is a recon? Any indicators?

  23. gbyeow Said,

    April 26, 2006 @ 10:21 am

M55 looks OK. At least its lighter than a DELL (if I remember correctly). Heck, everything is lighter than a DELL… Which vendor your friend bought it from? RM3500 is kinda pricey, especially for the crappy condition. Toshiba has never been known for their service. Personally speaking, it would never be my first choice.

I still have the image of a Samsung Q30 etched in my brain. But knowing my luck with Samsung products, I best stay away from it. Plus it’s damn weak but expensive compared to the bulkier machines.

The biggest indication is when the price is too good to be true. A second way to identify one is by asking them the warranty period and who is providing the warranty. If its not the original manufacturer, you can be certain that its a reconditioned unit (just make sure you get everything in black and white, else it would be your word against theirs). Usually, they have to indicate that it is reconditioned. But some vendors just quietly let it slip.

  24. Jian Said,

    April 26, 2006 @ 5:26 pm

thanx. Btw, M55 is 2.4 kg while dell is at least 2.8kg. I think mine is more than that. Samsung? Haha, I stay away from their product too. Oh yeah, the vendor refunded my friends. It seems they complained too much and they can’t stand them anymore. lolz. My lappy arrived today but going to take it from the shop tomorrow. Cheers… :)

  25. gbyeow Said,

    April 27, 2006 @ 4:56 pm

So how’s the new notebook? lol. Wish I was collecting one too! Alot of people buying the 6400.

I was going through some old newspaper and came across an advertisement before PC fair where it was going at RM3,549 for a 1.66GHz duo core, Win XP home, 15.4″ WXGA TFT, 512MB DDR2, 80GB HD, 24X Combo drive, 128MB ATI Radeon, 1 year warranty, and free delivery.

I suppose the price difference between yours and this one is in the bigger graphics card and the longer warranty. How fast is your processor?

  26. Jian Said,

    April 28, 2006 @ 2:12 pm

Everything u mentioned is the same. The diff are 256MB ATI Radeon, 3 years CC. I am getting the RAM from outside. 2 sticks of 1GB Corsair. So pissed that I have to pay extra this week because the RAM price had increased. anyway the price for the lappy is RM4258 inclusing a large backpack. If I’d customise again for the current pricing lappy, i would have to pay RM305 extra.

how fast? Did u mean the scores? The processor is the same, T2300. Oh yeah, izzit usual if the screen’s beneath is hot?

Anyway, the design looks okay but the machine is just like what u said, bulky. Oh the fans are on the sides now. I always tot they are situated beneath the lappy. Nevertheless, the machine is very quiet not like my cousins Inspiron 8300. Really hot and noisy. My lappy’s temp rarely reaches 50deg cel.

So far so good? I wonder if the more RAM i put in, the lower will lappy’s temp go? The shop helped me to clear all the unwanted applications but it still seems a lot to me (54). I got PANDA antivirus software. izzit ok?

    Hello there,
I plan to have a notebook for my personal use and also for my kids (age 6 - 4) to get to know what computer is all about… I mean for them to play some games, to see pictures in the internet… just to introduce them how to use the computer. As for me, I would only use them to browse and email. Can anyone guide me on what brand, model, specifications etc to buy plus the price. Can you also suggest to me from where I can get the best deal. Really apprecite your input.

  37. gbyeow Said,

    August 3, 2006 @ 7:51 pm

    Hi Lynn,

First things first, I assume you’re Malaysian, so I should tell you that PC Fair started today (if you’re in Terengganu). That’s as good a place to start as any.

Now I’m not sure how much detail you’re looking for. So I’ll just make one recommendation to make things easy. Probably the best bargain in the market at the moment is the DELL Inspiron 6400 which goes for about RM3,099.

Let me know if you need more details or if you want a few more models to work with. Probably the best way to go about this is to decide on a budget first. If you have a budget, then it’s easier for me to suggest the models that fall within that price range.

  38. Max Bibi Said,

hi, i got a really bad and old graphics card, since i wanna play NFS Carbon, i need to hav better one………..prefer nVIDIA Gforce, but.can i get a good one (which can last for one or two years) priced below rm200 during the dec. pc fair?? hard right?? if i can get one with that kinda price , pls tell me the model of it yeah?? thankz bro!!

G: Hey there. First things first, there are a few things that will influence the cost of your graphics card.

    1. Slot type (AGP/PCI-E)
    2. Model (nVIDIA chipset - Higher end obviously higher price)
    3. Video RAM (128/256/512 MB)
    4. Bit rate (64/128/256/512 higher = faster transfer)
    5. Manufacturer (MSI/Asus/Gecube/Gigabyte/Saphire/etc)

Having said that, you CAN actually get an entry level nVIDIA GForce card for under RM200. When I say entry level, I mean one with 256MB video ram and can play really cool games that my aging TNT2 can’t even dream of touching with a long stick.

AGP cards are dirt cheap and not a problem. PCI-Express cards are harder to get under RM200. You should be able to get a decent card for around RM250. If you don’t know whether you’re running an AGP or a PCI-E, you’ll have to open up your box to check. AGP slots are relatively short while PCI-E are slightly longer than the normal PCI slot (e.g. the ones where you slot your sound card/modem/ethernet card).

Here are some pre-PC fair prices from a couple of months back (don’t have the latest prices):

      AGP slot
    • Forsa GForce FX5500 256MB - RM170
    • Winfast GForce A6200 128MB - RM165
    • MSI GForce NX6200 DVI 128MB - RM210
    • PCI-E

    • Forsa GForce 6200LE 256MB - RM160
    • Gigabyte GForce 6500TC 256MB - RM229
    • Gygabyte GForce NX7300GS 128MB - RM220
    • XFX GForce NX6200TC 64MB - RM200 (a little low on RAM)

Most of the cards above should allow you to play NFS Carbon. However, how well they’ll work is debatable. You’ll have to be careful about the cards that go for cheap. Some cards are labeled as 256MB video RAM but in actual fact carry only 64MB and supports up to 256MB. If you’re uncertain, ask the sales rep. If you’re still uncertain, don’t buy it. Get someone who knows about it to go along with you. While PC Fair prices are a bargain, I’ve known of cases where the consumer were fleeced by the vendors.

i have a budget of 2500 for a laptop can i find one at the pc fair & pls asst me the brand with camera build in if possible.

G: The question is really depends on what you’re after. You can definitely get a laptop for under RM2500. However, the specs will be entry level at best. One of the older Centrino Mobile chipsets or a low end Core Duo. Doubt that you’ll be able to find one with a built in camera though. Following are the cheapest notebooks you’ll find in the year end PIKOM PC Fair which have reasonable specs:

    • FTec (RM2499):
Core Duo 1.6GHz, 256MB RAM, Seagate 80GB SATA HD, Combo Drive (DVD + CDRW), Integrated Graphics and Audio, Genuine Windows XP Home. Approximate weight is 2.3kg.
    • Acer (RM2499):
Core Duo 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM, 60GB SATA HD, Combo Drive (DVD + CDRW), Integrated Graphics and Audio, Linux OS. You don’t get Win XP but you do get more RAM.
