i have a budget of 2500 for a laptop can i find one at the pc fair & pls asst me the brand with camera build in if possible.

G: The question is really depends on what you're after. You can definitely get a laptop for under RM2500. However, the specs will be entry level at best. One of the older Centrino Mobile chipsets or a low end Core Duo. Doubt that you'll be able to find one with a built in camera though. Following are the cheapest notebooks you'll find in the year end PIKOM PC Fair which have reasonable specs:

FTec (RM2499):
Core Duo 1.6GHz, 256MB RAM, Seagate 80GB SATA HD, Combo Drive (DVD + CDRW), Integrated Graphics and Audio, Genuine Windows XP Home. Approximate weight is 2.3kg.

Acer (RM2499):
Core Duo 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM, 60GB SATA HD, Combo Drive (DVD + CDRW), Integrated Graphics and Audio, Linux OS. You don't get Win XP but you do get more RAM.

hi, i got a really bad and old graphics card, since i wanna play NFS Carbon, i need to hav better one...........prefer nVIDIA Gforce, but.can i get a good one (which can last for one or two years) priced below rm200 during the dec. pc fair?? hard right?? if i can get one with that kinda price , pls tell me the model of it yeah?? thankz bro!!

G: Hey there. First things first, there are a few things that will influence the cost of your graphics card.

Slot type (AGP/PCI-E)

Model (nVIDIA chipset - Higher end obviously higher price)

Video RAM (128/256/512 MB)

Bit rate (64/128/256/512 higher = faster transfer)

Manufacturer (MSI/Asus/Gecube/Gigabyte/Saphire/etc)

Having said that, you CAN actually get an entry level nVIDIA GForce card for under RM200. When I say entry level, I mean one with 256MB video ram and can play really cool games that my aging TNT2 can't even dream of touching with a long stick.

AGP cards are dirt cheap and not a problem. PCI-Express cards are harder to get under RM200. You should be able to get a decent card for around RM250. If you don't know whether you're running an AGP or a PCI-E, you'll have to open up your box to check. AGP slots are relatively short while PCI-E are slightly longer than the normal PCI slot (e.g. the ones where you slot your sound card/modem/ethernet card).

Here are some pre-PC fair prices from a couple of months back (don't have the latest prices):

AGP slot
Forsa GForce FX5500 256MB - RM170

Winfast GForce A6200 128MB - RM165

MSI GForce NX6200 DVI 128MB - RM210

PCI-E
Forsa GForce 6200LE 256MB - RM160

Gigabyte GForce 6500TC 256MB - RM229

Gygabyte GForce NX7300GS 128MB - RM220

XFX GForce NX6200TC 64MB - RM200 (a little low on RAM)

Most of the cards above should allow you to play NFS Carbon. However, how well they'll work is debatable. You'll have to be careful about the cards that go for cheap. Some cards are labeled as 256MB video RAM but in actual fact carry only 64MB and supports up to 256MB. If you're uncertain, ask the sales rep. If you're still uncertain, don't buy it. Get someone who knows about it to go along with you. While PC Fair prices are a bargain, I've known of cases where the consumer were fleeced by the vendors.

Hi Lynn,

First things first, I assume you're Malaysian, so I should tell you that PC Fair started today (if you're in Terengganu). That's as good a place to start as any.

Now I'm not sure how much detail you're looking for. So I'll just make one recommendation to make things easy. Probably the best bargain in the market at the moment is the DELL Inspiron 6400 which goes for about RM3,099.

Let me know if you need more details or if you want a few more models to work with. Probably the best way to go about this is to decide on a budget first. If you have a budget, then it's easier for me to suggest the models that fall within that price range.

Hello there,
I plan to have a notebook for my personal use and also for my kids (age 6 - 4) to get to know what computer is all about... I mean for them to play some games, to see pictures in the internet... just to introduce them how to use the computer. As for me, I would only use them to browse and email. Can anyone guide me on what brand, model, specifications etc to buy plus the price. Can you also suggest to me from where I can get the best deal. Really apprecite your input.
