Chapter 19: Where There’s A Will, There’s A Way
Where there’s a will, there’s a way. But the will should only ever have its way when one was dead.
In a different state, at a different time, Seng Kor was sweating bullets and shitting bricks as he sat in the waiting room. On either side of him were the elusive William and David that he was supposed to meet some days earlier. As usual, they were never around when they were needed. But just when Seng Kor was trying to avoid them after having lost Unke Lin’s secret documents, they had popped up out of nowhere.
The news of the missing documents had spread fast. Faster than one would have believed possible. What they say about walls having eyes and ears were true. And the wonders of modern technology and the internet made it possible for Unke Lin to know of the empty briefcase almost the same instant that Seng Kor had opened them on that fateful night. That knowledge had driven Unke Lin into a rage. One that threatened to blow an artery had he not relieved some of the pressure with some members of his harem. But that didn’t help with the fact that the documents were no longer in his custody.
Unke Lin’s last will and testament was out there somewhere and he wanted them back. It would have been easy enough to draft another one with his lawyers but that wasn’t the point. The will contained more than the means in which his property would be divided among his kin. No, the will contained information that he would not, or rather could not, have out in the open until he was dead and buried. It was his way of mocking the living when he was far away from caring. However, while he was alive, that information would be the ruin of him. He had to get it back.
Sitting in his comfortable high backed executive chair, behind his polished oakwood table, Unke Lin brooded over the matter. The curtains were drawn shut and the lights were dimmed, throwing the room into dark shadows which reflected his foul mood. He knew that the three stooges responsible for the loss were sitting just beyond his office doors. He knew but he chose to let them wait. Let them sweat it out, imagining the worse. The imagination is a powerful tool and the worse that they could each individually concoct in their minds would be motivation enough for what Unke Lin required them to do. Taking a deep breath, he paged his lovely secretary to let the three boys in.
Obediently, Seng Kor, William, and David walked through the doorway. For some reason, they couldn’t help but feel a shiver down their spine. In their current position, walking from the brightly lit exterior of the waiting room into near darkness was more than mere symbolism. It was like moving from the cool comforts of the living into the eery unknown of the abyss. That drove their imaginations wild.
Oblivious to the fact that it was the object of desire for so many individuals, the document that was Unke Lin’s last will and testament perched precariously at the edge of a coffee table. It contented itself to laying there on its back with its covers thrown open, and whoring its deepest secrets to anyone who would care to take a peek. However, the only persons in the room with it were much too engrossed to be bothered at the moment.
The latest episode of Desperate Tai Tais was playing on the television. The youthful face of a boy toy flashed his charming smile across the 42 inch plasma screen. The smile was designed to be disarming and flirtatious. Across the globe, many a woman have sighed and gone weak in the knees at that boyish grin full of whitened teeth. Coupled with the body of a Greek god, the producers of the show had found the perfect sin for Silais the world over. But the smile, like the will, had little effect on the room’s occupants.
The show was long over by the time Untie Lin and Mrs. King were done rolling around on the luxurious persian rug in Untie Lin’s private service apartment. The accomodations served as her secret hideout and base of operations as she plotted her moves. It also played host to the occasional escapades, like the one that had just run to its conclussion. Stretching out the kinks from her sore body, Untie Lin reached down and picked up the document from the floor. The furniture around her was out of place and in disarray, testament to her latest romp and conquest.
“Once again, I must commend you on your excellent work”, Untie Lin spoke first, raising the documents and acknowledging her partner. Mrs. King merely blushed and smiled demurely in return, allowing the older woman to continue without interuption. As Untie Lin sat down next to her, Mrs. King laid her head gently on her lap and closed her eyes. She could hear her suitor leafing through the document above her. The sudden intake of breath from Untie Lin caused the younger woman to open her eyes and take notice. Untie Lin laid a hand reassuringly on Mrs. King’s head and slowly played across her soft glossy hair.
“This is good. Very good indeed.” The voice purred softly in a self satisfied manner. Knowing that she had done well, Mrs. King snuggled closer, allowing herself to enjoy the warm tingling sensation that was building within her. Untie Lin continued to pat her head as she mulled over this newest information that she now held in her hand. In her mind, a new plan was slowly starting to take shape.
