Stranger Things Have Happened

I’m just thinking about an incident that happened some weeks back. WL and I were at the local Pasar Malam and I was parked in front of some houses. We took our time and spent about 2 hours eating, drinking, and browsing our way through the stalls that lined every nook of the T-junction that played host to the weekly night market. It was mostly uneventful, that is until we got back to my car.

If you know me or have been following this blog, you should know that I drive an old Tiara. The bumpers are scratched, and it has a dent on the side courtesy of my sister who backed her car into it when she was overexcited, having then just been betrothed to my, now, brother-in-law. That’s another story all on its own, and one that I still laugh at when I recall it on occasion. Going back to my car, basically what I’m trying to say is that I’m driving an old junk of a jalopy that is valued at RM2,000. I sometimes jest that this is the best car to borrow if you’re desperate since trashing it in an accident will only cost you such a measly sum.

So you can imagine the surprise when I returned to the car to find that someone had been fiddling with the lock on the driver’s side, trying to get in. Surely there are better cars to break into! All the doors were unlocked but nothing inside was disturbed, or at least nothing that was immediately noticeable. A quick check revealed that my digital camera was still in the glove compartment, as was my portable harddisk, and GameBoy Advance (GBA). In the back, the box of stuff from my old office remained intact, and the KFC mini bucket containing RM200+ in small change was untouched.

What then was the motive of trying to break into my car? It was just before April Fool’s day (the same day Boredworkers.com’s server crashed) and I wonder if someone was not trying to play a prank on me :S

I suppose I should be thankful that nothing important was lost. Perhaps the person(s) trying to break in never had the opportunity to rummage through my gear. Perhaps someone had walked by at an opportune moment to scare them off. Or perhaps, it wasn’t a breakin attempt at all. Just some drunkard trying to open the doors to the wrong car! Whatever it was, it just goes to show that not even the worst of cars are safe from vandalism.

As a result from the unlikely incident, the locks on the driver’s side no longer functions. This is doubly inconvenient as the locks on the Tiara only functions via its central locking mechanism. The driver side lock cannot be engaged by pushing down on the peg. So if you see a big bloke unlocking a Tiara from the opposite side of the car or struggling like a fool to straddle the gear shift, that bloke is probably me. Tap my window and say hello. I’ll take you out to coffee.

The moral of this story, I suppose, is to be wary where you decide to park. Choose a lit location. Granted that if someone wants to steal into your car, it makes little difference, but its safer than parking in a dark alley where you can get mugged, or worse. Anyone out there experienced something similar, or stranger still? Give us a holler. We would love to hear your stories.

I’m not surprised. My friend’s 20 yr old junk was stolen recently.
These days with the escalating price of steel, they’ll steal anything that can be sold to scrap traders. Signboards, grating, iron gates etc.

Hmm. I wonder if I junk my car and sell it as scrap metal, will I get more money than trading it in. Haha.
