Random tech rant

A friend talks to me about restarting a Linux server when one of the server program inside it goes kaput. I shake my head. “Hello, this is NOT Windows!” I want to say to him. C’mon people, Linux and *nix servers don’t need restarts (except with the occasional manual fsck reboot and hard disk crash! That’s why the world depends on them for running the Internet backbone, not Windows Servers!) Now I can understand why this friend thinks that a reboot is necessary because it’s the Windows way of doing things. That’s perfectly understandable for a fresh grad or newly-minted MCSE but we live in a heterogeneous computing world and IT pros are expected to know their stuff. Even Microsoft has Linux and OpenBSD boxen lying around in their test labs and I don’t think their administrators simply reboot them. For people who understand the term ’system administration’, restarting a Linux box to resurrect a server program is rather… appalling.

Rant ended. Ah, much better.

Put on Phua Chu Kang yellow boots and kick the machine. Keep repeating (repeat + boot = [re][boot]) until it decides to listen to you. That’s what I do on and off since the computer is below my desk and doubles as a foot rest.
