Siem Reap: How’s The Weather?

This morning, I woke up feeling a little groggy from too little sleep. The night before, we were rushing around packing our luggage and comfirming our check lists in preparation for our planned trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia. After a quick ride to the LCCT, and a short two hour flight on Air Asia’s flight AK846 we finally set foot on the hot dusty tarmac of Siem Reap’s International Airport.

“What the heck are we doing out here?”
- Hyperhex ~ Very good question -

We breezed pass the customs without any trouble. We didn’t even have to apply for visas as we were holding Malaysian passports. Outside the arrival hall, the guest house pickup was already waiting for us. Hyperhex had done the reservations earlier in the week and had confirmed the pickup prior to departing Malaysia. What was a surprise though was finding a second guy from a hotel that we had no communications with holding up his name on a placard. From what I understand, guest houses and hotels often try an underhanded tactic of acquiring your names in an attempt to pull customers to their establishments. Interesting indeed.

After the initial confusion, we all piled into the guest house van and were on our way. That’s when we noticed that they drive on the RIGHT side of the road! The long dusty road that we drove on turned out to be the main highway and was messy with traffic zipping in and out on either side. Definitely not a good idea to drive if you’re unfamiliar with the roads and/or driving on the opposite side of the street. (On a side note, while we were walking through town, we witnessed an accident in front of a petrol station. You don’t want that happening to you…).

It took 20 minutes to arrive at our accomodations (more on that when I return with pictures).

How’s The Weather?
After checking in and a quick lunch at the guest house’s restaurant, we took a walk into town. Gawd it was HOT! To make it worse, it was DRY and DUSTY! Worse still there was absolutely NO WIND! That about sums up the weather over here during the day time. I figured that the temperature would carry on through the night. Boy was I wrong.

The reason I’m actually sitting here ín front of an internet ready computer provided by the guest house is because its raining blardy cats, dogs, cows, and elephants outside. From the sounds of it, there’s a strong wind blowing through. While I’m thankful for the cool respite, the rain is stopping us from enjoying the sunset at Phnom Bakheng. Its probably going to spoil the sunrise tomorrow as well. Oh well, on to plan B.

We’re headed out for a buffet dinner and cultural show in a bit. More updates soon.

[…] People have been bugging me for pictures, stories, and details about my extended vacation. It’s a good thing that not many have asked me for presents because quite frankly, I didn’t buy any. For those who don’t yet know, I went on an extended vacation to Cambodia (and later to Singapore) mid May. After putting it off for a long while, I finally started to sieve through the pictures that I have with me. So here’s the story in little bits and pieces. I’ll be filling in the gaps left by the mini updates that I posted up while I was on vacation (namely this, this and that). […]
