Siem Reap: 0430 And 0600 Hours
We’ve been here 3 days and 3 nights; spending 2 of the days crawling through the sprawling landscapes of Angkor (or Capitol in English). The place is strangely magical. Walking through the ruins gives you a sense of awe and wonder at the magnificence of the structures. You can’t help but be amazed by the architecture of centuries past.
0430 Hours
Two days we awoke at an ungodly hour to try and catch the sunrise as it rose from behind the five towers of Angkor Wat. Two days we failed. It has been overcast with showers through the nights. However, inspite of that, we’ve managed to cover alot of ground. When most groups stop for rests in the hot blistering afternoons, we press on through the grounds, as though desperate see as much as territory as physically possible. My legs throb and ache from all the walking and my skin burns feverishly from the heat of the sun. We purchased a 3-day pass on our second day, setting us back USD40 a person. I think we’ve had our money’s worth.
Angkor Wat, Bayon, Preah Khan. These are just some of the places we’ve visited. Each with its own stories and myths. Each with its own design and style. All built for reasons known only to the kings that ordered their construction.
0600 Hours
Its now 0600 hours and WL and I find ourselves sitting restlessly waiting for our transport to arrive. Our friends have once again tested their luck with the sunrise. I wonder if they had succeeded. The evening before, we managed to catch a partial sunset. While it didn’t rain, the sky is still slightly overcast. Well, no point guessing. We’ll know soon enough.
As for us, we’re headed out to Phnom Penh on the 0730 bus. A last minute decision. The guest house has been kind enough to purchase the round-trip tickets for us. USD6 per person per trip. The bus company sends a shuttle around to the various accomodations to pick up its passengers. Good service in my opinion. Although I’ve yet to see the bus itself, so I’ll refrain from commenting further.
I’m not exactly feeling very good at the moment. My stomach feels bloated with gas and my skin is crawling. We had a traditional full body massage the night before. While it felt good during and immediately after, my back is screaming now from all the twisting and turning. Funny, really.
Anyway, more updates as and when I find the time. For now, we’re off to see the city.
