Another Weekend In The Books

It’s 11.11pm, Sunday. That’s another weekend in the books; the last weekend of July, with exactly 22 more weeks left to the year. Strange how time flies. I’ve always figured that it to be inversely proportional to a person’s age. When you are young, a year is a relatively long time. 1/10 is 10% of your life. But as you get older, the percentage drops. 1/20, 1/30, 1/40, 1/50. The longer you’ve lived, the smaller the footprint of a year becomes. But inspite of the shrinking years, I’ve had a really long day.

Flexi Hours

The few jobs that I’ve held to date all practice flexi hours. In principle, it means that I can start work anytime so long as I fulfil my hours and deliver on projects. In practice, you usually have to be in the office for the ‘critical’ hours. This is usually a time slice during peak office hours, somewhere between 10.00am to 4.00pm. While that is the ideal, it is rarely enforced. So basically, I’ve had a free reign over my working hours for the whole of my working life. While it is empowering to be in charge of your own time, it also has its drawbacks.

Converting Windows And Unix Text Files

Ever had the need to work on a text file (e.g. *.txt) under both *nix (Linux/Unix) and Windows? Ever edit a text file that looked perfectly fine in Windows but turns out crap with a whole lot of CTRL-M (^M) symbols at the end of each line? Ever save a good text file in Unix and have find that all the text have been scrunched into a single line in Windows? I’ve experienced all the above when I first started out with Unix. The key, I suppose is understanding why the heck it is happening and the ways around it.

GotW: Alchemy

Best to get this done before it gets buried by other stuff. Last week was a slow one in the office. It was a chore waiting for one process to finish in order to start on the next. I found myself with plenty of time in between. To fill in said spare time, I searched for and found Alchemy. On a side note, Popcap has revamped their site. While it looks nicer, it seems a little more cumbersome than before.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

After much waiting, I finally had the opportunity to catch Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. There was of course alot of hype about the newest installment of PotC following the runaway success of its predecessor, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. WL and I were likewise taken in and very much looking forward to the movie since seeing its trailer some months back.

Sports Centre In England Again?

For the love of all things good, let the issue die! What is it with the Youth and Sports Ministry and their obsession with implementing the sports centre in London? It’s like a sore that they can’t leave well alone. Scratching only makes it worse but they probably get some kind of perverted kick out of it. Even after London authorities have said no to the centre, to inaudible sighs of relief throughout Malaysia, the ministry still insists pursuing it. Or perhaps it is not the agenda of the ministry per se but mad hatters in the form of Datuk Azalina Othman Said and our playboy deputy PM Najib.

Windows XP Howto: Popping The Notification Balloon

Notification Balloon, Warning Bubbles, Popup Tooltips. Whatever you wish to call them, they are an irritation. I get four of them just for starting Windows, a couple more for signing onto the internet, and probably a dozen or so throughout the day. It is probably one of the worst Windows XP features. If you’ve ever been harrassed by these evil bubbles, I’m glad to let you know that you can get rid of them. Here’s how.

Hazy Days

The annual practice of open burning to clear agricultural and development land across the Straits of Melacca have once again made its mark on the shores of Peninsular Malaysia. Inspite of agreements made yesteryear, the Sumatrans of Indonesia are at it again. For the umpteenth year in a row, the skies are once again hazy, laden with smoky pollutants, causing the measure of Air Pollutant Index (API) to make its slow exodus into the red.
