Starlight Cinema 2006 (Malaysia)
Starlight Cinema, Asia’s largest outdoor cinema festival is back! The annual event is held in five different locations across Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Jakarta, Thailand, and Hong Kong). The Malaysian leg of the event will be held between 01 August 2006 and 19 August 2006.
For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, Starlight Cinema is an open air cinema where movie goers are invited to sit on the grass under the stars and enjoy a movie on a large screen projector. The movie screening is held on a large field. Free seating applies. Just find a good spot and get comfortable. Since it is open air, it is advisable to bring along a mat and some cushions. It is also a good idea to bring along an umbrella or raincoat in case it rains. While deck chairs are allowed, you’ll have to sit at the sides if you decide on it to avoid blocking the view of other patrons.
There will be movie screenings from Wednesdays through to Saturdays, with a double header on weekends. Patrons will be allowed entry from 6.00pm with the first movie screening starting at 8.00pm. The day ends when the curtain falls on the last movie. During that time, movie goers are free to move about, and refreshments will be provided by Food & Beverage (F&B) stalls set up onsite.
Previously, the event was held at the Mont Kiara Equine Park. However, this time around, the venue has been moved to the newly opened Sentul Park off Jalan Ipoh. This is the same area where the KL Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) is located. Refer to the following map for directions.

The sound system and projector quality is acceptable. Not quite the same as an indoor cineplex but good enough to watch a film by. While the movies screened are usually the latest and most popular blockbusters of the year, they are not the main draw. Instead, it is the environment and the chance to watch a movie outdoors. Starlight Cinema is the perfect setting for a nighttime picnic with family and friends.
Last year when they were in collaboration with Citibank, Citibank credit card holders entered for free. Additionally, they also provided a sheltered lounge area with mattresses and bedding. Unfortunately, Citibank is not one of the sponsors this year. Instead, they have Standard Chartered, and I’m not sure whether they’ll extend the same facilities and offer. A pity really, since I used to attend the screenings for free.
However, having perused the movie schedule, I’ve identified several movies that I’ve failed to catch over the past year and would still like to watch. If the timing is right, perhaps I’ll pay a visit or two. If you have never experienced watching a movie under the stars, now might be a good time. Just keep your fingers crossed and hope it doesn’t rain.

It’ll be an awesome experience watching an outdoor movie with the sharp bitter smell of wood smoke. Wouldn’t miss it for the world :)

That is indeed an unfortunate affair. Call it bad timing. Best to test the weather before actually venturing out.
