Windows XP Howto: Popping The Notification Balloon
Notification Balloon, Warning Bubbles, Popup Tooltips. Whatever you wish to call them, they are an irritation. I get four of them just for starting Windows, a couple more for signing onto the internet, and probably a dozen or so throughout the day. It is probably one of the worst Windows XP features. If you’ve ever been harrassed by these evil bubbles, I’m glad to let you know that you can get rid of them. Here’s how.
- Evil Notification Balloons -
Warning:
Removing the notification balloons requires modifying the Windows Registry. Before editing the registry, it is always advisable to make a backup first.
- Run regedit
- Browse for and locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Advanced - Right click an empty space on the right side panel and select New » DWORD value
- Name the new entry ‘EnableBalloonTips‘ (minus the quotes)
- Double click the new entry and change the Value data field to ‘0′ (zero)
- Save, exit regedit, log off and log on again (or restart the computer)
- If you did things right, the notification bubbles will be singing to the tune of WWE superstar John Cena
- You Can’t See Me! -
Disclaimer:
Editing the registry via regedit is always risky business. If you don’t know what you’re doing or you’re uncomfortable with it, please refrain from modifying the registry.
