Another Weekend In The Books

It’s 11.11pm, Sunday. That’s another weekend in the books; the last weekend of July, with exactly 22 more weeks left to the year. Strange how time flies. I’ve always figured that it to be inversely proportional to a person’s age. When you are young, a year is a relatively long time. 1/10 is 10% of your life. But as you get older, the percentage drops. 1/20, 1/30, 1/40, 1/50. The longer you’ve lived, the smaller the footprint of a year becomes. But inspite of the shrinking years, I’ve had a really long day.

Sunway Group Family Day 2006 (SGFD)
For me, the day started at 6.30am when the alarm rang. I had managed to catch exactly 40 winks, each worth 6 minutes. No where near enough for a weekend in my opinion. Saturdays and Sundays are for sleeping in late and lazing around. Heck, I woke up earlier than I usually do for work! And the reason being Sunway Group’s Family Day which was to be held at Sunway Lagoon.

Two hours later, I found myself with WL and her family waiting in line to get into the water park. Entry was free courtesy of Sunway, and we had coupons in abundance to exchange for food. This year’s SGFD is a lot more organised than previous years. Crowd control was good, food was excellent (especially the ice cream), and there was plenty of space for families to settle down, picnic and have fun. But the fanfare and partying seemed pretty mellow. Perhaps there were fewer people in attendance this year. Or maybe I’m older, jaded and not as excitable as I used to be.

I did manage to squeeze in three laps around the water circuit, a ride on the slide, and two sessions in the wave pool. We then spin dried on a 360 boat ride, adventured in the Grand Canyon River Rapids, and took a roller coaster train ride through Gold Mines to complete our Wild Wild West adventure. It was fun, by any standard.

On one of our laps through the water circuit, we met with this 9 year old brat who decided to tag along with us and just refused to leave. He grabbed onto our float, pulled us along, kicked my shins, slapped my hands, and basically made a whole lot of noise. We did our best to ignore him, hoping he’d go away but he was having none of that. Failing that approach, I dug deep, looking for my inner child and gave him a short taste of his own medicine. Bad mistake as it just made things worse. It makes me wonder whether I was that bad as a kid. I suspect I was.

Sunway Pyramid
At 4.30pm, WL and I went over to Sunway Pyramid. If you don’t yet know, (Midyear) Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival 2006 is back. That’s six full weeks of shopping madness for six full weeks with up to 70% of discounts throughout Malaysia. The sale started on 22nd July 2006 and will end 3rd September 2006.

We were shopping for office clothes. Or at least WL was, while I was dozed off at various locations throughout the shopping complex. I was too drained from the morning’s excursion. Inspite of her valiant 2 hour effort, we still went home empty handed. I don’t really have much faith in Malaysian sales. The problem is that shop owners usually take sales as that time of the year to clear their old stock. WL was complaining to me that most of the clothes on display were old and stained with age and rust marks!

WL did manage to find a pair of Reeboks that she liked. Unfortunately, they didn’t have it in her size. I guess that means we’ll be paying one of their other branches a visit in the coming week. That means another round of shopping. @.@

Steamboat @ Taman Yulek
The weather was balmy, with hints of rain in the air. That’s perfect weather for steamboat. We arrived at the steamboat restaurant at 7.30pm, placed our orders and waited. There were 6 of us, and we placed an order for 4 persons. Inspite of that, I feel stuffed and bloated. There was too much food. Or maybe it was because I had 2 packets of Nasi Lemak, a turkey sandwich, a ham sandwich, 3 chocolate bars, 12 mini springrolls, and 2 cones of ice cream earlier in the day.

Too much food, too little excercise. I’ve skipped gym two weeks in a row due to work commitment and various unforseen circumstances. I’ll be making a concious effort next week.

TESCO, Ampang
9.30pm. TESCO’s opened a new outlet in Ampang. The place is huge, and I just love love it for the uber cold air conditioner. However, the place is as disorganised as all the other TESCO outlets. Their stock is jumbled together and there doesn’t seem to be much of a system in terms of item grouping. As usual, you’ll be able to find floor cleaners in the food section and dish washers with the facial cleansers. I really wonder if someone will wash their face with dish washing liquid one day. I guess it would be good, since they are made with 100% pure lemon/lime while facial cleansers are usually full of artificial stuff. Heh?

Someone’s been playing with the beans and barley. They’ve managed to mix all the beans together. We were looking for red beans and had to pick and choose for 5 minutes before getting a bag full.

The bread section was good though. We bought 3 bags of potato bread, oven fresh and piping hot for half the standard price that Carrefour sells it for. There was also a crowd around the mini doughnuts that were going for 10sen a piece. The aunties were grabbing them by the dozens. I felt unqualified to fight them for it, so I left those tasty sugar coated lumps of dough alone. Besides, they are bad for my health.

Back Home Again
A shower feels especially good after a long day spent walking. My legs are sore and tired. I’m three feet away from where my day started and my bed is calling for me. I hope you had as full a weekend as I did. Good night.

Why do they call it potato bread? I don’t think there’s any potato in it, and even if there was, I could never taste it. I tell you, we have one of the strangest food names (”kai si kor” - guava in Cantonese, bubur chacha - doesn’t make me dance) in the world and one of the strangest eating practices in the world (sitting at roadside mamak tables, waiting to get ploughed by a speeding drunkard-powered car).

Wah thanks guys for thinking of us :) Sorry if we couldn’t join you. BTW be careful of buying shoes from non-brand outlets during this sale period. That means, it’s better to get a pair of Hush Puppies from a Hush Puppies store than from an aggregator like Metrojaya or Isetan. I had a bad experience with the latter >_
