GotW: Rocket Mania Deluxe

It is strange how one thing usually leads to the next. Two weeks back, I was scratching around at Popcap looking for a new game to try which resulted in last week’s GotW. That game led me to Nuclide, a games developer, which in turn led me back to Popcap and this week’s game, Rocket Mania.

This game reminds me of a Nintendo Game Boy game called Pipe Dream (which you can play online). The difference being that instead of laying pipes, you have a fixed pieces placed on the board that you can spin around to create tracks. The objective is simple enough. Complete circuits from the left hand side of the board to the right hand side of the board to launch rockets. The more rockets you launch at a go, the better.

There are three different game modes, Classic, Arcade, and Strategy. Each has it’s own set of rules and slightly different gameplay. In classic mode, you have to launch a fix number of rockets within a stipulated time limit. In Arcade mode, new pieces will drop onto the board as time passes. The objective is to keep the pieces from reaching the top, ala tetris. In the Strategy mode, you’re given a fixed number of matches. Launch three rockets or more rockets at a go and matches will drop onto the board which you can then collect and add to your stock. Run out of matches and the game ends.

In classic and arcade modes, coins and gems will drop onto the playing board. The gems will give you a nice point bonus while the coins will upgrade your rockets. Rockets are upgraded for 5 coins each at the end of each level. The higher the rocket’s level, the bigger the bang and points you’ll earn when you launch it. Rockets are upgraded from the middle outwards. Other power ups include bombs which blow up surrounding pieces and score multipliers.

The simple game mechanics coupled with the different modes gives the game a high replay value. Classic and Arcade provides some fast paced action while Strategy gives you a slow paced near endless play. My favourite is probably the Strategy mode, since there’s no rush to launch the rockets. It’s the perfect filler for those dull moments between meetings. I’m trying to launch all the rockets at the same time to see if there’s any sort of special effects. So far, I’ve only managed 8. Let me know if you’ve managed to get all nine and tell me what happened.

To help you on that mission, refer to Boredworkers.com’s GotW for the recommended downloads:

  1. Install the game.
  2. Uncompress the keygen archive.
  3. Start the game.
  4. Run keygen.exe.
  5. Click the ‘Generate’ button to generate the license key.
  6. Click the ‘Copy’ button to apply the generated key.
  7. Continue playing the game.

If you’ve always had pyromaniac tendencies and enjoy putting on a good fireworks display, this is the game for you. Go ahead and put on a show to remember.
