New Astro Channels

Was channel surfing on Astro wwhen I came across an alien network. Viewing the information page for the channel revealed that the new programme would be available on 31st August 2006. Out of curiousity, I scrolled through to see if our good ole Satellite TV company had anything else up their sleeves. All in, I found four all new offerings.

New Astro channels available from 31st August 2006:

  • 43: Astro Kirana (Movies Package)
    - Showcasing a wide range of Asian and European movies complete with behind the scenes commentary.
  • 64: Astro Ceria (Fun Package)
    - Malaysia’s first channel dedicated to children filled with informative programmes, activities, and interactive fun.
  • 74: Zee TV (Variety Package)
    - Hindi movies, music, drama, and game shows on demand. Entertainment direct from the flamboyant sets of Bollywood.
  • 75: Animax (Variety Package?)
    - Asia’s first ever dedicated channel offering the best and latest in anime.

It’s about time that Astro introduced something new. It’s been a while since they last improved on their stock. They increase their subscription fees but do little to improve the service. The previous update was crappy to the point that I didn’t even bother checking them out. At least now, with the return of Animax, I’ll have a new favourite. More fodder for us channel surfers and couch potatoes. I’ll probably also be able to appreciate Kirana but will most likely be giving Ceria and Zee a miss. We’ll see what happens and if they come up with anything else.

I keep seeing that ‘press R’ button keep appearing from time to time. Next time it does, try to luan luan whack the buttons. Maybe there’s a secret code that will give you the Yamade channel and if you’re lucky, you’ll stumble on it. You might get something like that secret Yamade movie they put on TV3 a few years back.

I guess you did not bother to check whether the 4 new channels are subscription ‘pay per view’ based :)

No, they are not pay-per-view. In order to charge PPV premiums, the shows have to possess a certain quality, such as new box offices that are not released for home viewing or once-off big events such boxing. Only an idiot would try to sell the four channels mentioned above as PPV to customers. Astro Ceria PPV? What makes it any better than Nick, Disney, or CN that they should charge a premium for it?

I was quite sure that I listed the channel number as well as the package that they would be released under.

actually they be 7 new channels. Free until next february after they finished giving out 50 new channels (they so say), then they revamp the packages and give us a new cost. I hope it’s cheap

Lisa: You’re absolutely right. There are 7 new channels. The four mentioned above and three more Chinese channels (CCTV4, etc probably under the Dynasty package).

mandave: And you’re right too. It’s only going to get more expensive. As with all things Malaysian, inflation is the natural course. It’s rare to have a service that gets cheaper over time =.=”
