GotW: Heavy Weapon Deluxe

It’s Wednesday again. Time really does fly and the week is simply whizzing by. I’ll be away for a couple of days so here’s something to keep you entertained. Heavy Weapon Deluxe published by Popcap.

The game adopts the run n’ gun gameplay made popular by the Contra series and couples it with a plot, story telling style, and graphics akin to Metal Slug.

The year is 1984 and Red Star has launched a surprise global assault. Allied troops are greatly outnumbered. Forced into a corner, they are left with two options. Surrender or fight. Calling on their last line of defence, they send in Atomic Tank! *Cue heroic 80’s music*

You control the Atomic Tank through 19 missions of mass destruction and mayhem. Each level is packed with action, as you dodge enemy fire while laying waste to the Red Star army with your deadly arsenal. As with most games of this genre, a big ugly boss awaits you at the end of each scrolling level. As you progress through the levels, your weapons become more powerful with various powerups dropped by the in game support chopper. These include increased fire power, tank speed, split shots, and the ever useful atomic bomb which blow up everything on screen.

In addition to the your standard gun turret, you also get to choose from six different addons at the start of every mission. Each level you complete gives you another point to spend on these nifty defencive upgrades and weapons of mass destruction. Choose wisely as it will influence the success of your mission. Can you beat the odds and push back the threat of the Red Star army?

Once you’re done with the Mission mode, you can test your skills in Survival mode. In this mode, the goal is to survive for as long as possible. There are no end stage bosses. Just an endless stream of increasingly difficult enemy waves. As with the mission mode, powerups will be dropped from time to time, along with the occasional random addon.

While the game play is easy to learn and highly addictive, the game is by no means a pushover. You’ll be hard pressed to pull off a victory at the later levels as the screen becomes blanketed in enemy cross fire. The game spots cartoonish graphics and an absorbing sound track. The plot, enemy and levels are all creative, clever and funny. It is actually interesting to read through the enemy intel that is presented at the beginning of each level to see what the creators have up their sleeves. With names like Frigistan, Vodkavania, and Killingrao, you know you’ll be having a good laugh.

If you’re curious and would like to play more of the game, point your browser to Boredworkers.com’s GotW and follow the instructions there. Good luck and have a fraggingoodtime.

I got ‘invalid menu handle’ when I tried to install the patch. Well I downloaded it but my computer wouldn’t accept it and gave me that ‘invalid menu handle’ sign. Same thing happened with Rocketmania too.

It’s actually not a patch but a keygen. You can try and manually enter the generated id and key.
