Rock Star: Supernova!

When I first heard about Rock Star: Supernova before the season started, the first thought that popped to mind was, “Not another singing contest“. Just out of curiousity, I watched the opening act and was hooked. While I’m not an avid rock fan, all the songs were familiar to me. It was a nostalgic rock fest with fifteen of the most talented rockers selected from across the globe.

With Brooke Burke and Dave Navarro playing host, the stage was set for the selection of Supernova’s front man/woman. Over the weeks, we watched the performers grow and mature. Additionally, the band consisting of Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted and Gilby Clarke also took the opportunity to rock the stage and preview a few of their new songs. After listening, I must say that I like their sound.

Ten weeks later, we are down to the five best performers:

If blog comments at Windows Live™ Spaces are anything to go by, Dilana and Lukas seem to have the biggest following. However, after having heard the final five perform two songs each (including an original track) on stage, I can imagine either Toby Rand or Storm Large fronting the band. They seem to have the best personality fit for the group, with a good amount of fun, rock, and sex appeal. To top that, their original songs were the most memorable to me. Lukas is too goth and probably better off as a solo act, Dilana’s gone over the edge and should have been sent packing by now, while Magni is too stiff.

I think this week elimination will be a repeat of the previous week’s boobs over dark horse elimination. The finals should consist of Storm, Lukas, Dilana and Toby. At the moment, it is my personal opinion that the competition is Toby’s to lose. If the competition was judged on the fun factor, Toby would win by a mile. He’s by far the coolest to hang out with and has good chemistry with the band (evident by the butt tweaking action towards the end of his performance). However, things are still very much open, leaving it to the fans and the band members to decide.

So what do you think? Who will be dropped this week and who will make it to the finals on 13th September 2006. More importantly, who do you think will become the eventual winner and front the rock band, Supernova?

This show is one class act in creativity and marketing. Imagine Windows Live Spaces getting into the picture; I’d rather see Red Hat sponsoring the event, it really fits their “rebel rocker” image, imho :)
