MATTA Fair (II): MAS Air Fare
Although Malaysian Airlines (MAS) holds it’s own MAS Travel Fair, it participates in the MATTA fairs held twice annually. In this year end edition of the fair, MAS is offering the following discounted air fares for it’s direct flights to various destinations across the globe.
Tickets may be purchased from the MAS booth at MATTA Fair, online via MAS’s MATTA Fair webpage, or through travel agents. In additional to discounted ticket prices, MAS is also offering up a host of Golden Holiday Packages.
Tickets are rather pricey and the availability of the tickets for travel within this year (2006) is rather limited. When I took a look early yesterday (when online reservations opened), there were no available tickets under the discounted prices for Australia until March 2007. But I guess that’s understandable since the remaining months of 2006 are considered peak season due to major holidays. Most tickets were already sold prior to MATTA Fair under normal prices.
At any rate, below are the listed prices for air fares on offer during MATTA Fair. Take a look and refer to the online reservation system to see if they have tickets for your destination of choice. Who knows, you may just find something that suits your needs. Good luck and happy bargain hunting.
Please note the following:
- Listed prices are pre-tax and surcharge
- Valid for round-trip travel
- Valid for the MATTA Fair period between 22-09-06 to 24-09-06
- Tickets must be issued prior to 29-09-06 and no waitlist/open dated tickets are permitted
- Travel period is between 02-10-06 to 24-05-07 and subject to availability
- Minimum/Maximum length between roundtrip tickets:
ASEAN: 2 to 7 days
Orient/India/Australia/New Zealand: 3 to 14 days
America/Europe/Middle East: 5 to 30 days - Penalties for ticket changes and reissues apply
- No refunds or rerouting permitted

MAS Travel Fair 2006: Last Day

Frequent Bargain Traveller Said,

The MAS Matta (II) 2006 AIr Fare though attractive is a bit restrictive this time around. They did sell open jaw ticket tickets previously (where I booked my daughter’s MAS ticket flying outbound Kuala Lumpur-Stockholm and inbound London-Kuala Lumpur…..and she filled in the gap to other destinations by flying SAS with reasonable fare by booking online early….there are other budget airlines too like Ryanair and EasyJet!). However this time MAS only sell return tickets. So my search for two tickets outbound Kuala-Lumpur-Auckland and inbound Melbourne-Kuala Lumpur immediately went down the drain!
My next option was to fly to Melbourne return (from there fly Qantas or Air NZ to NZ) but again I was made frustrated by the 14 days ticket validity despite MAS website showing many seats availibility during my intended duration of travel (end of March 2007 and early April 2007). 14 days is just not enough for me to cover what i intend to do in Melbourne and NZ …I just need a few days more! in fact less than a week! I am very frustrated!!
So it is back again browsing at one of my favourite website for travel bargain…the Singapore based Misa Travel Online Travel Store….www.airfares.com.sg. The only snag is I have to depart from Singapore. Going to Singapore is not bad because one can easily take the morning express bus like Aeroline (www.aeroline.com.my) and be in time for the evening flight. However coming back is a bit of a nuisance because the flights normally arrive Singapore late evening (9.00pm onwards) and you are stuck until the next morning. But I have done it before! You just have to remain cool and not complain because at the end of the day you are just trying to stretch your Ringgit!…..and enjoy reading a novel while waiting!!! I am very sad at not being able to help MAS fill in those empty seats! Instead I am helping either BA/Qantas, SIA or even Austrian, Emirates……………what to do?

You’re absolutely right about the MAS offering. My sister was likewise in a dilemma on whether to purchase their discounted tickets and suffer the duration limitation or to take one of the more expensive airlines and have more flexibility. I think she went for the latter as it afforded her the freedom to do what she wanted. She just wanted 2 days extra.
An additional downside was that the MAS flights were already nearly fully booked up to the end of the year. That made short term holiday planning with MAS impossible. I guess that influenced and forced my sister’s decision.
I sometimes feel that bargains are not bargains at all. Retailers usually jump on the sale bandwagon just to get rid of whatever leftover stock that they have remaining. And even then, they still make a profit out of it. Just imagine the profit margins when they aren’t discounted. I guess if you think long and hard about it, the consumer is always getting the shorter end of the stick. Just a matter of whether you’re happy and can live with it or otherwise.

“An additional downside was that the MAS flights were already nearly fully booked up to the end of the year“.
I don’t know why we still put up with the MAS “yes, the prices are correct, but no, we already have no seats, ” crap. The SIA *website* rules in the international flights’ bargains dept - with or without MATTA. At least they have tix available for several days during their awesome promo rates.
“The consumer is always getting the shorter end of the stick.”
In the context of the 14 days’ ruling, yes it’s a pain in the barney. Well, I guess we gotta be more creative in our bargain hunting, and I think that Frequent Bargain Traveller has already a headstart in this dept :)
Taking your comment out of context, as a sentence on its own, I’m wondering if I’m right if I say that consumers aren’t as badly squeezed as travel agencies. I’m theorising that they are heading into the sunset more and more as paperless tickets and aggressive initiatives by airlines such as SIA are introduced (of course I don’t have broad statistical data analysis on hand, so it just remains as a thought at the back of my brain :P I know that tour agents are a dying breed in countries like the USA.) BTW I would recommend overseas-bound bargain hunters to give a call to Mayflower — it gives some pretty good service at good rates for international destinations :).

Dear sir / mdm,
I would like know the air fare from PG / Perth, Depart on the 26th May 2007 and Return on the 10th June 2007.
I would be thankull if you kindly let me know the air price for the above destination.
Thank you.
G: Hi Subhashini. Air fares change depending on availability and tiers. You might like to check out MAS online reservation to get a feel of the pricing. While I would love to help you out with a quotation, I’m not qualified to do so (e.g. I’m not a tour agent or even remotely involved with the travel industry). Give your local tour agency a call. I’m sure they’ll hook you up. Or if you’re a DIY type of person, wait for the coming Malaysia Airlines Travel Fair (starts 31 Jan) or MATTA Fair (16th - 18th March).

To purchase ticket we pay cash or cheque depand on the travel agent .
To make refund why are the travel agent and airline takes 6 months to 1 year to refund and the refund only will be 10-20% of the ticket price.
What is happening here is the travel agent or the Airline is giving us giving us wrong information or what. Please explane about this matter ASAP because I need the money to buy another ticket. As a Malaysia I have all the right to know about this.
G: Hi Kumar. I’m not exactly an expert in this subject matter. Neither do I represent any travel agents or airlines. It is my understanding as a consumer that refund rates are subject to terms and conditions that are agreed upon during the initial purchase of tickets. In cases of special discounts, this may differ from the standard terms and conditions. For example, Air Asia has a no refund policy on specially discounted tickets. I believe that MAS also has a standard in terms of refunds. I can’t tell you why travel agents and airlines take 6 months to a year to pay you back the refund. This is subject to the travel agent and airlines that you’re dealing with. Again, different companies have different policies.
kumar Said,

Thanks for your comments. Please assist me to the right person in order to make this complain because the travel agent not giving me any information about the refund. I need the right place to make this complain or else I have to take legal action on this matter. Very urgent. ASAP
G: Well, it really depends on who you want to complain against. Specifically, if you’re having refund issues pertaining to flight tickets, it’s probably best to file a complaint with the airlines itself. In this case, you might like to call their customer service. In the case of MAS, their hotline is 1-300-88-3000 if you’re within Malaysia and +603-78433000 if you’re calling from outstation.
