Oh Sushi @ MidValley

This is actually a little old. WL and I went to Oh Sushi a while back, before they changed their external decor (again). It was after our usual weekend gym session and we were starved. Since we were feeling spendthrift that day, we decided on Japanese. There are quite a number of Japanese restaurants inside Mid Valley Mega Mall. Oh Sushi was one of the few that we haven’t yet tried.

The restaurant is located on the ground floor entrance of Mid Valley Mega Mall, Centre Court. From the outside, Oh Sushi looks like a classy Japanese themed restaurants. The sort where you expect to be charged exhorbitant fees for an ‘authentic’ Japanese meal. We stood in front of the restaurant wondering whether to walk in or not. Ultimately, it was the Lunch Set that drew our attention and helped us make the decision. After we were seated, we found out that the Lunch Sets are only valid on weekdays. Since we were already commited, we decided to try the food anyway.

Menu
- Oh Sushi: Menu -

Since the place was new to us, we took our time browsing the ala-carte menu. We told the waiter to give us time to do so and said we would call for him when we were ready. While he was gone, we looked both at the menu and the tables around us to see what the other patrons were having. There were surprisingly few customers while we were there considering it was a weekend. Two families were on either sides of us while a few couples sat together at the cubicles. Perhaps we were there at an odd hour. It was just a little after the usual lunch period, around 2.30pm.

It took us a good five minutes to decide on what we would have. I think it took longer to get the restaurant staff’s attention in order to place our order. We decided to go with a Tepanyaki Ika (Calamari) Set (RM20.00) and a bowl of Wakayama Ramen (RM14.00). I was a little reluctant to order the squid since I wasn’t a particularly big fan of that seafood.

Restaurant Decor

With the orders out of the way, we took the opportunity to look around the restaurant. The interior of Oh Sushi is quite big. Bigger than the restaurant entrance gave on. There are actually two entrances to the restaurant. The main entrance is the one inside the mall concourse area, while a second side entrance was located outside the mall facing the office lots behind Mid Valley. Upon entering the restaurant from the main entrance, there’s a long bar counter on the left while cubicle tables occupy the right. This further opens up into three very well lit restaurant sections. The kitchen is located right at the back of the restaurant entrance. The tables were hardwood with plush and comfortable cushioned seats. Pictures of signature dishes adorned the walls.

Teppan Ika (Calamari) Set
- Oh Sushi: Teppan Ika [Calamari] Set (RM20.00) -

Anyway, the Teppan Set arrived first. The tepanyaki calamari and vegetables were served on a hotplate, together with a bowl of rice, cold vegetable salad, and miso soup. The sizzle and pop of the tepanyaki gravy on the hotplate as the set arrived was like an ochestrated musical accompaniment to our grumbling tummies. It had taken long enough to arrive, nearly 20 minutes after the order was placed.

The pan fried calamari was tender and tasted good with the slightly sweet gravy of caramalised shallots. Perfect with the piping hot bowl of rice. Unfortunately, the miso soup was quite salty and didn’t sit too well with my taste buds. Inspite of this and my earlier qualms, I was enjoying the meal more than expected.

Wakayama Ramen
- Oh Sushi: Wakayama Ramen (RM14.00) -

In contrast to the don set, the ramen left much to be desired. The soup noodles was served in a large bowl with a rather interesting looking spoon. Interesting looking but difficult to wield. Presentation aside, the noodles were bad Bad BAD. To start with, the soup was luke warm when it should have been steaming hot. I had half a mind to send it back to the kitchen but did not fancy the prospect of having to wait another half hour for it to return or having the staff do something unhygienic to the soup. So we dug in. Which brings me to the second Bad point. For such a large bowl, the serving was bloody small. There were little bits of meat and vegetables floating in the murky soup together with the noodles but that was it. I was expecting something more substantial for the RM14.00 price tag. And BAD point number three was the reason why the soup was murky. It was starch. The sort of starchiness that you get when cooking egg noodles without first rincing the noodles in cold water. Starchy to the point where the noodles were sticking together and difficult to swallow (see picture). We were basically paying RM14.00 for a starchy bowl lukewarm wantan noodles minus the dumplings and barbequed pork slices (read: kosong/empty).

The entire meal cost RM39.10 after 5% government tax and 10% service charge. I really don’t understand the deal with the service charge since there was little service rendered. While we didn’t order any drinks to go with our meals (the drinks were particularly pricey), I would have expected them to serve complimentary green tea or even plain tap water. But no, they did not have the courtesy to do so.

The restaurant’s kitchen is inconsistent in terms of food quality. While the tepanyaki set was reasonably good, the ramen was incredibly bad. Bad enough that we left the bowl unfinished which is a rarity for me. It is doubtful that I would ever visit the place again and I won’t recommend it either. Overpriced and under performed is all I can say.

    7 October 2006, Saturday.
me & my frens were having lunch near the smoking area of the restaurant. suddenly i heard an argument between manager and the customers who were sitting very near to us. A minute later, the manager threw a stack of a comment cards on that table and shouted loudly to the customers ” Here are the cards, complain la!!!”. i was so shocked with his a awful behaviour to the customer. As far as i know, the four girls who sat near to us did not do anything wrong to the staff, therefore i was so surprised and dissapointed with his behaviour. Before i left the restaurant, i found out that he is the manager there. i couldnt believe it as he behaved like a gangster. i know i am not gonna visit the restaurant anymore because the food is merely “average” and the behaviour of the manager is the biggest reason of me not going there anymore. A role model like him to the staff would definitely affect the reputation of the restaurant because there is no way for the customer to comment on the food, environment and services of the restaurant. without constructive feedback, the restaurant will never be successful.

TUX: Yeah, skip it. There’s better Japanese food elsewhere… like Sushi King (which I’m also boycotting).

Miss Cheong: That is a very bad indeed. If a part-time staff misbehaved, I may have given them a second chance. But a manager. If I hadn’t already been avoiding the place, I would definitely be doing so now and advising others to do the same. Boycott them and see what happens when their business drops.
