WireFly.com
I first heard about Wirefly when I stumbled upon their U-DOO: do your own tone, custom avatar and ringtone service. It was hillarious, tweaking the avatars and voice. Imagine the weird looks you’d be receiving if your ringtone sounded like this. That was created from the stock recordings. You have the freedom to record your own voice or convert via text like this. Think of the possibilities.
Before proceeding, you should probably listen to and note this as well.
Custom avatar ringtones aside, WireFly is an online Cell Phone and Wireless service retailer. What this basically means is that you can purchase a handphone and service package from them online. Services plans includes popular providers such as Cingular, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Nextel, Sprint, and Alltel.
Probably one of the great things about service packages is that the phones come free. Over here, you usually have to buy your own phone and service separately. Mind you, the phones they are giving out are not old outdated models. Think along the lines of Motorola RAZR, LG Chocolate, Sony Ericsson W300i, and Samsung D807. If you place an order, they’ll Fedex it to you without any additional charge if you’re within the service area. Unfortunately, all this comes with limitations.
While the Wireless service retailer is true, the Cell Phone bit is a bit of a stretch. You can’t purchase a phone on its own. You MUST purchase it with a service package. In other words, WireFly isn’t really a cell phone retailer. They are more of a service reseller. The phones aren’t being sold by them, they are given free by the service provider. WireFly is essentially selling wireless service packages. Try as I might, it was impossible to get a phone without the service. If you choose a phone, they’ll ask you for a zip code. If you key in a zip code, they’ll suggest to you a package and a different phone. WTF? I just want to buy the damn phone. What if my phone broke and I’m trying to replace it? Are you saying that I have to sign up with a new service? They have a great platform for selling phones but instead, they drive away those customers.
Other gripes I have with the WireFly website is that it keeps popping up a new page/browser every time I click a link on the site’s menu. If they are trying to annoy the user, they are doing a really good job. I much prefer my browsing experience to be smooth and seamless, thank you very much. Popups and new windows simply disrupt the flow. Let the users follow a link and leave the page already. If the content of a particular page is so important that you need to keep a user on that page, then repeat the information on the next page.
I think they have to be a little more clear on the service that they are providing. Instead of passing themselves off as a online cell phone and wireless carrier retailer, they should be honest and say that they are only selling wireless service. That way, users who are only looking for a phone won’t waste their time browsing the catalogues. That said, I love the services that they provide on the side. Their custom avatars and ringtones are really cool. I’m not sure about compatibility though. It may or may not work with most phone models. Since I don’t live in the US, I can’t really verify this. But it was fun to play with nonetheless.
If you live in the US and you’re looking for a new wireless carrier, a free phone and good discounts, then WireFly’s the place for you. Otherwise, you’re better off walking into a retail shop near you.
