Fantasy Sports - Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Pride FC aren’t very popular over here. However, this mixed martial arts (MMA) sports has a large following in other parts of the world. The Ultimate Fighter reality show screened on AXN gave the sports some much needed exposure and visibility.

I’ve seen some interesting canned matches (read: recorded not live or in person) but never really took an interest. It is tough to remain interested when there are few like minded people to share a drink and discuss the latest fights with. Unlike football (soccer) in this football crazed nation where every other person is a fan, you’ll be hard pressed to find two other persons who would openly admit to consistently following the UFC season.

If you ARE a fan of UFC or Pride FC or MMA in general, then you’ll be happy to know that there exists a fantasy MMA website where you can mingle and mix with people with the same interest. The site has two games for its members to participate in. Both are centred around predicting the results of a fight.

In the first game, players will be awarded points for correctly picking the winner. Additional points will be awarded if members can predict the outcome of the match as well (e.g. match in 1st round, 2nd round, etc). The second game allows punters to earn fantasy dollars by predicting matches as well as placing bets with other members (gamble?). At the end of each season, the person with the highest points will be presented with a cash prize. This season’s top prize is worth USD500.00. A little cash incentive for doing something you enjoy. Not bad.

I guess the best part about MMA Playground is that it brings together a group of people with the same interest. There’s an open forum where you contribute and participate in discussions about a particular fight, the UFC, Pride FC, or generally anything related to MMA. You can also join a Fight Camp which is a sort of club formed by and includes other members of MMA Playground for a personal touch.

As I have iterated on several occasions, the idea is a novel one - bringing together people with the same interest. Where you bring it from there is wholly up to the members. If you are interested in the MMA, then this is just up your alley.

This post was brought to you by MMA Playground.
