Have You Got The Groove?
With all the reality music talent searches going on out there over the recent years, you’d think it would be a breeze to get discovered. In reality, that is far from the case. Only a handful make it big, while the majority of struggling musicians are left behind. For them, it is difficult, if not impossible to get decent exposure. Not anymore.
The internet opens up a whole new world of fans and consumers. Welcome to the new world and new distribution media. There are services to help undiscovered bands cut their first records, there are websites dedicated to promoting bands, and there are stores that deal solely in music exchange.
One such site is Music.com, a community of music lovers who listen to a wide range of genres. Music.com is opening up its doors all musicians to publish their music online. In return, they gain visibility and exposure. If you’re a musician (successful or not), you’re welcome to join the community, upload your music, promote it, and grow your fanbase.
Information about the program is pretty vague at the moment. While the free publicity is and wide audience base is pretty cool, there is no mention of compensation for sales (if any) and the like. Additionally, the coverage for online distribution of the music files (e.g. music download) is limited only to America. That means if you’re from a different geography, you might find it difficult to reach your target group. That’s not to say that you won’t have any reach, just a limited one.
At any rate, this is a ‘free’ service. If you’re a musician, you can use it in the meantime to promote yourself, your band, and your brand of music. Extra exposure never hurt anyone… much. Think about it, consider it, sign up for it, and prove that you’ve got the groove. The choice is very much up to you.
