SMART Toll Rates: RM2.00

The SMART toll rates has been finalised. After weeks of free use, motorists who wish to use the tunnel will have to pay a fee of RM2.00. Toll collection will start on Friday, 15 June 2007.

PETALING JAYA: Users of the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) will be charged a RM2 toll from 11.59pm on June 14, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said Monday.

There’s been much speculation about the toll rates. In fact, we’ve had a go at guessing the toll rates ourselves. RM2.00 is well below our pessimistic estimates. With the elections just around the corner, the next question people will start asking is whether or not the rate is set for this sole reason.

Regardless, RM2.00 is fairly cheap and reasonable for the convenience the road provides. I’m sure many motorists would gladly pay the premium to get into the city quickly. But that’s only if the tunnel doesn’t jam up due to backlogs. We’ll just have to wait and see. How about you? Is RM2.00 reasonable for you?

Acceptable LAH… We have fully utilized the “shareware” during the one month free “trial” but noticed that it’s actually slower to use SMART in the morning, but it helps a lot in the evening when we are heading back home. We paid for the first time yesterday, not much people using it on the first paying day. Can be a very good alternative when you see Jalan Imbi is jammed.

G: Yeah. I agree. I think RM2.00 is decent. It’s the price of 1 litre of petrol which is about what you burn sitting in the jam. But that’s provided the road tunnel itself doesn’t jam up. Got caught the other day for 30 minutes because of a backlog from GH. Oh yeah. Also saw a 2m python sleeping by the drain inside the tunnel.
