Island Defense v2.8.1a Map For Warcraft 3 Battlenet

A new official version of Island Defense map has been released for play on Warcraft 3 Battlenet. For fans of the Island Defense custom map, please do download Island Defense v2.8.1a from the official Island Defense Homepage.

There have been several fakes by hackers floating around. Among others, there’s a v2.90 which causes the game to hang indefinitely during loading. Please do download this latest version and only host Island Defense games using the maps from the official site.

Release date: 29 June 2007
Release features: New race, new titan and other goodies.

If you’ve never played the map before, the game is similar to Vampirism and Tree Tag. There can be up to 10 builders (defenders) and a titan (bad guy). The builder’s goal is to kill the titan and his minions. When builders die, they turn into a Titan Minion (much like Vampirism). The titan’s objective is to convert all the builders into his minions.

For me, this is one of the better tag maps. Unlike Vampirism, Tree Tag, and other tag games, there’s a whole lot more variety in the form of different builder races and titan races. Each race has it’s own unique qualities and abilities. With the variety comes numerous strategies that can be applied to winning the game. The map is easy to learn but difficult to master.

Additionally, the map is also balanced throughout the game. There’s a chance for either side to win through the early, mid, and end-games. Both Vampirism and Tree Tag are imbalanced at some point or other (Tree Tag is worse with Bears).

If you’re playing on BlueServer, you can get an official version from trusted hosts like myself (gbyeow) :D Island Defense kakis are online between 8pm and 6am. Whenever I’m not on WiFi, I usually host Island Defense games between 10pm and midnight. You can look me (and other players) up in the following channels:

  • Clan IDEF (Island Defense clan on BlueServer)
  • island defense
  • island def

Lately, I’ve been getting the urge to ‘fat din’ during games by basing in odd locations on the map. If you want to have a good time in a clean wholesome manner (minus the cursing and ‘better-than-thou’ attitude of DotA), come play Island Defense where players are usually courteous. There are of course the odd idiot or two but that’s the exception rather than the norm.

Come join us tonight for a session of Island Defense.

My experience with Island Defense is that the players are just as rude/vulgar if not more so than in DotA. All the games I’ve been in were not at all noob friendly, and the built-in custom kick doesn’t allow new players any in-game experience. I’m sure your games are probably courteous, but the all the ones I’ve been in–without exception–had not a single sympathetic player to newcomers. It was part of the reason why I gave up trying to learn to play this. Even if I, or any other new player, directly ask for even simple advice, everyone else laughs and is entirely unhelpful/offensive.

G: I must apologise for the rude natured gamers. It’s actually frustrating to see ‘experienced’ players treat new players with contempt. They don’t realise that they were once new as well and that without new blood, the game will eventually dwindle and lose its appeal. Which server do you play on? I’ve found that most international playing grounds tend to have bad natured people playing. Unfortunately, the server that I’m usually on has been shut down. Else I would have been more than happy to host a game with you.

At any rate, I can only say to keep at it. The learning curve isn’t too steep (older versions are better for playing single player games to figure out the buildings and controls cause the Titan will spawn and allow you to mine for gold. Too bad the titan doesn’t have AI to chase after you. It just sits there at the cave).

I don’t think your links are correct, it keeps on directing me to another website…

G: Well, the post is a year old. The site used to be islanddefense.net but I believe it’s since been moved to islanddefense.org.

its true… players of island defense are even more rude and unhelpful to newcomers than dota ive played a couple of games now and usually by end game im kicked still, i dont know what ive been doing wrong which is why like the post above, ive pretty much given up on the game

G: That’s a waste. The game’s kinda fun once you’re used to it. Especially if you find a nice familiar group to play with. Since stopping a long while back, I actually miss the game and the company.
