The subtitled Naruto Shippuuden episode 56 has been released. From the second half of that episode, it looks like Naruto Shippuuden is going into filler mode again. The manga is currently at chapter 397 while episode 56 of Naruto Shippuuden is based around chapter 318, which means the manga is about 80 chapters ahead in story arc. Assuming around 1.5 manga chapters per anime episode, that means there’s roughly 50 episodes until the anime catches up.

I would have thought that would be sufficient for Naruto Shippuuden to continue staying true to the original manga storyline. Unfortunately, the producers have decided to play it safe and throw in some fillers. We’ll just have to wait and see how many that episodes actually constitutes. Hopefully the number of filler episodes this time around won’t be in the magnitude of the filler hibernation we witnessed at the end of the original Naruto anime series.
