PIKOM PC Fair 2008 (II): On The Grounds

Made my way to Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) where the PIKOM PC Fair 2008 (II) was being held today (and over the coming weekend). The fair was supposed to open to public at 11am but for some odd reason, I managed to walk pass the guards and wound up being first in line at the Hall 4 entrance at 10.30am.

PC.com & HWM Subscription
Like previous installments of the thrice annual PIKOM PC Fair, this round saw the usual magazine exhibitors offering interesting free gifts with a year’s subscription. From PC.com, the first 100 subscribers each day would get a free 160GB external HD from either Imation or Western Digital (WD). A year’s subscription of PC.com was going for RM158. A copy is typically RM10. That means the annual subscription actually cost RM38 more than usual. I guess the external HD wasn’t quite as free as it should be.

The stall next door was HWM. They were offering a free nano drive and laptop cooling pad. Quite a good offer as well, especially since the Lenovo Thinkpad T60p I’m currently using is overheating frequently. A 12 month subscription of HWM is RM144.

One good thing about being first in line is that I managed to be the first 100 in line at the PC.com stall. I was in fact #69 in line. A very interesting number indeed. Sad part is that in order to qualify, you need the original form taken from the July issue of PC.com. No worries if you don’t have it on hand. You can buy a copy from the PC.com counter for RM5. That’s RM5 for the subscription form BTW. Hidden costs aside, I’m quite happy with the new toy.

1TB Internal SATA Harddrives
A friend asked me to keep an eye out for a 1TB SATA drive. Found a few by various manufacturers; Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung. All of them cost about RM525. Aside from that, there was an offer from Western Digital on the external 1TB HD for under RM500. Pretty interesting how the prices have come down over the years. Three years back I bought my 40GB external drive, it set me back a good RM300. Now, a drive that’s triple the capacity is going for less than double the price.

Hot Girls?
Had a little fun with my friend. Aside from the TB drive, he also asked for some photos of the hot promo girls. Here’s the short SMS conversation we had…
Me: So friend. Headed off to PC Fair. Anything you want?
Friend: Nope nothing really. Pics of babes?
Me: Cheap phone. No camera. I describe the babes to you and you use your imagination.
Friend: Ha. How can.
An hour later, I arrived at the fair grounds and started messaging him… every half hour…
Me: Imagination download #1: 2 dozen girls from Kingston internet security suite dressed in nurses outfit with very short hemlines.
Friend: So how’s the view?
Me: Imagination download #2: Sony girls in hot slinky black number with deep cleavage and endless legs.
Friend: BTW you get an A+ for communication. My imagination is running wild.
Me: Imagination download #3: Hot chicks in micro mini denims and see through blouse tied off @ midriff and plunging necklines asking you to touch their diamond…

The HTC Diamond, that is.

Smart Phones
And that seems like the main theme for this round of PIKOM PC Fair 2008. There were a whole lot of exhibitors selling all the latest models of smart phones. From Samsungs to HTCs, you name it, they had it. And they were all flying off the shelves, especially the HTC Diamond which was retailing for RM2700+! Is there a money tree somewhere that I don’t know of?

A good time
Anyway, I had me a good time walking the grounds. Met up and chatted with a couple ex-colleagues. Signed up for PC.com and got a free external harddrive. All this before lunch time. A good productive morning i my books. How bout you? Have you been to the PIKOM PC Fair 2008 (II)? Do you plan to go and what are you looking out for?
