Malaysia Tax E-Filing 2008

The e-Filing system for 2008 tax submissions is up and running. The forms online forms have been available since 3rd February 2009. For those who are ready to make your online tax filing, you can do so now via the Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN) eFiling site.

To do so, you’ll need to first apply for an eFiling account. Account details should be automatically available together with the hardcopy forms that LHDN sends out to non-eFiling tax payers. For those new to the process, you basically need to do a first time user registration using the details that comes with the annual tax forms. Once you have done so, the account and digital certificate should be valid for three years. This is the fourth year since eFiling was introduced in for the 2005 tax submission (in the 2006 time frame).

Mine’s going into the third (final) year and it’s still valid. I’ll know more about the renewal process once my certificate has expired next year. Until then, I don’t have much details on how to renew the certificates; i.e. whether you have to reapply or if it’s automatically updated. Perhaps those who signed up for eFiling in its first year and whose digital certificates have expired could share with us the necessary actions to continue using the system.

Regardless, do remember to process and submit your taxes before 30th April 2009. Relatively little has changed in terms of exemptions and rebates since the 2007 tax and budget.
